Is it possible to mount a drive as the file system root?

I know that activating the hive based registry requires a clean sysgen which I can't do since I do not have the BSP, but I was wondering if it could be possible to mount a drive (the one that also contains the boot nk.bin) as the file system root. Could this be done just by registry editing?
