Just got a new-to-me jornada 720 and it's got an area just to the right of the center of the screen where I have to press down harder to register a touch. Is that normal or does this unit have an issue? I tried recalibrating but that doesn't seem to have any impact on this.
To try and demonstrate I have drawn wavy lines across the screen at a fairly constant pressure and you can see where it "misses" some of the waves.

Take the screen out of the bezel and clean it around the edges with 100% isopropyl alcohol. Then reseat the connectors. If that doesn't solve it, it is likely delaminating or a fault in the ribbon.

Well, such a resistive touchscreen works with 2 vaporized foils as a resistance layer. If there are micro-cracks in it, you notice that by first having to press harder and harder and then at some point nothing works at all.
It may also be that the conductive layer is no longer as conductive.

It will probably no longer be possible to change the display foils due to missing parts.
And if it's not a contact problem with the flex cable, then you need a replacement display

OK, thanks to both of you. I will try C:Amie's suggestions and see if that causes any improvement.

Before I open this unit up...should I try to return this one? How common is this issue?

Very common. If you have a warranty opti0on, make it their problem though!

OK, I have the screen out. Can you point me to where I should clean the edges in my picture?

Also, which cables should I re-seat? Just the ones that had to be removed for disassembly or should I also re-seat the touch input ribbon cable?

I just went ahead and cleaned the entire face of the screen. The cleaning definitely removed some discoloration (you can see it in the lower left of the above picture near the backlight power transformer). I also re-seated the touchscreen connector as it was badly wrinkled in the way it was inserted previously. We'll see what happens next

That is a shame. If after cleaning the contact and the screen digitiser it is still playing up, then you'll be looking at replacing the digitiser/screen I'm afraid. So if you can send it back to the supplier, I would.
