| Hi all,
Wondering if there is an active IRC channel or Discord server to discuss HPC ? |

| No, there isn't one! Feel free to ask any questions here
It's like discord except the information doesn't get lost in the ether after a while! |

What is the advantage of discord? I don't really 'get' it |

| Discord combines the features of Skype, IRC and some other proprietary sites into one 'service'. For a site like this it's probably more trouble than it's worth. |

| Oh, I know what it is and does, I just don't 'get' why I'd use it |

| Discord is really popular nowadays and many startups seem to be using it for gathering place and development forum. I don't use it so much, I just use it once in a while to get information available only in DIscord sites.

| Discord is fine, but not as a replacement for a forum |

I didn't know that. I guess there must have been some HPC clients?
I still watch hockey with a group of people on IRC. The only additional benefit to Discord that I can think of is message persistence. If I'm logged out and a message comes in, it's still there when I log back in. On IRC, if you're logged out, you generally miss out on everything that happens during that period. | I believe there was IRC on freenode some time ago. You're right about persistence with Discord.

Don't They'll be backstabbing JP and GB in equally good measure. The number of times they've lost embarrassing commentary about GB in the last 40 years is... humorous.

irc.hpcfactor.com did have a running server when we started. There was also a community freenode in later years. Thing was that I didn't want to have something else to manage it and I assume that Insurgent lost interest, so it teetered out. |

| We have a discord for the Computer Chronicles archiving project: https://computerchronicles.karpour.net/
For things like this it makes sense, since it's a small group of people for a specific project. Most of the accumulated knowledge goes right back into the project.
For something like HPCFactor it is not suited at all.. Many retro communities switched to discord, with the effect that the forums became abandoned, and lots of interesting info is now kilometers behind in some chat, mixed in with random chatter and barely searchable.
There's a saying: "Discord is where information goes to die"

| "Discord is where information goes to die" apt, given my observations on the subject... unless you're in the Pentagon |
