Well i downloaded the three files netbsd.gz, pbsdboot.exe, and miniroot.fs.gz
3.86 MB total and put them on 8MB CF card. (in hind site i should have also copies
my wireless drivers to the CF card also which i have done now) I performed a
full backup thru active sync and proceeded to boot up the latest BSD.
Unfortunatly there is hardly anything in miniroot.fs.gz (as i guess mini- implies).
Only installation files and the and a bare shell. Which got me to thinking how
hard could it be to make a miniroot.fs that instead of including the install program
included a few simple programs as to make some use of the HPC without a full
install. Like busybox with all its glory.

Great, what type of file is the .fs.gz ? some sort of disk image ?

Also perhaps it would be best to add a startup script in the miniroot image to
attempt to mount say "Internal flash rom" and "storage card 2" and look for
a directory called , say "linux", install the packages present there then execute
a script if present in that directory as well. Could make it much easier to mix
and match programs. I didnt see any busybox for netbsd hpcmips.

But until there is some way to suspend the machine, *nix wont be usefull
as the primary operating system.

tsdave,

I believe the .fs.gz file is a compressed file (much like a Disk Image (Mac) or .ZIP). I could be wrong, though...

ten, you are right, its a compressed file ... .gz. If uncompressed, the boot image what you get as a result. The file name or extension of it does not matter in this case as the boot loader simply does a binary load of the file and then does some offset and start executing from there.

A bit rusty here, but does the bootloader used above contain parameters for specifying the memory offset, video buffer etc?

Once I get the 720 releases out, I will see about cross-compiling the filesystem image to other linux-supported systems, like the z50. Busybox? There should definitely be busybox compiled for that processor, if not, I can see about cross-compiling that for you.

Although, I need to first get the arm cross-compiler working first...

Yup i knew it was a gziped file, but the miniroot.fs after expanding is what
i dont know how to open or modify. I cant open it with 7zip or WinImage.
I also cant seem to find out online. Maybe i will try posting to some netbsd
forums if no one here knows how. Thanks, dave.

From what I know, these are image files that are copied to memory directly and executed thereafter. I could be wrong.
