Also the system seems to be bare bones. I bought the unit in 97 or 98.

well, is it CE 1.0 or upgraded to 2.0?

smart media won't work, maybe if you buy a pcmcia reader for it...

it is ce 1.0. I do have the card reader and the unit just now recognized it. Is it possible to load programs from the card?

partially possible. if the exe is not a host installer, you can just copy it over.. usually the small ones that you can't run on the PC (instead get an error message) will run this way. the others need H/PC Explorer 1.1 and a connection between the hpc and the pc.
ce 1.0 doesn't know anything about cab installers this makes things harder...

Moved to Windows CE 1.0 Support
You can only use the SM card with a PCMCIA adapter, and then for (as cmonex says) a minority of software which doesn't require a host installer.

Yuor best bet is either a sync cable or IrDA donge for your PC - HOWEVER please be sure to read my posts in the IR support here in this CE1 forum, hardware forum and support section before spending out.
