Just making sure

... you could have meant the development of me taking the server down and never being able to get it to start up again

Official Notification of Major Downtime

Yes, we are going to be migrating over to the new server. during which time there will be no hpcfactor.com anything.

So. Please consider the site as postentially unavailable the entire day of Tuesday 14th February 2006.
Naturally we encurage you to check the site systematically over the course of the day.

Why are the HPC:Factor owners taking the site down?
You will probably have noticed that things around the forum have become a little slow and unreliable recently. We are taking the site down to perform a full set of database maintenence tasks as well as migrate over to a new, considerably more powerful primary HTTP server. This will make thing on hpcfactor run at tip-top condition and keep us online for the considerable future.

Is it necessary to disable the entire site?
Yes. Is the simple answer. HPC:factor uses more than one database, and the owerns - like you - do not feel that the server performance is a good reflection of the H/PC community to the Internet at large. We aim to get this problem sorted in the most optimal way possible, and that means deactiviating the entire site.

When will this happen?
14th February 2006. Due to weighted average on the owners side. The migration will occur during US Central Time (GMT -0600 hours). There is no set time to bring the site back up, but it is very unlikely that the site will be down for longer than the 24 hours in the day. Please do factor in that for some users there may be DNS update lags which cause the site to appear off-line for longer.

C:Amie, you should link the domain to your home pc, and have it say Hello when someone types in www.hpcfactor.com

I really wish I will have better things to do than check HPC Factor's availability on THAT day... But I doubt it

Frankly, I hope not - it wouldn't be fair, them having fun over there while the rest of us are without a reason for living for 24 hours.

In reality, they will probably spend the day working frantically to get everything working.

But...I suppose there could be a large party afterwards, when everything is working at 50 times the speed?
