Cardboard, personally when I have a few bucks to spare I like spending it on something tangible, something I can tinker and experiment with. Hpcs fit the bill prefectly. They're something practical and frivilous at the same time. Not many things can claim that.

Takwu, one of my fritzed 740s was a new in box old stock at my Staples for $150 or so.I was so excited until I got it home and it would hard reset every time I lifted it from the cradle.

Another day I hemmed and hawed about the demo 805 Staples had just marked down to $300 as I was standing there but I decided against it as I still had a bad taste in my mouth from the 740s and Toshiba had recently announced abandonment of the Americas.

But my pulse does race a bit each time I hit the pda aisle in Staples

A mint 728 went for $560 the other day. Having bought a machine from the same seller, I expect that unit was, in fact in mint condition.
Anything offered as mint that doesn't have photos to back it up is asking for trouble.
At $260, I think you got a great deal. I don't think anyone will trade for $100, I wouldn't, but you never know.

A J728 huh? Huzzah! I hope to get one as soon as I get a part-time job...

No offense, but why are many HPC owners buying several HPCs? I mean, after a while, wouldn't that get kind of expensive? What are all the extra devices for? I could understand if you were a seller, but...

However, as an HPC lover, this post will probably make me a hipocrite in a few years...

yes it does get expensive. so what

my usage pattern..

main hpc: sig3 / j728 (and maybe sig2 i still have to find time to load it with everything i want on it)
bsquare: phone
900c / intermec: for home use
j720 (upgraded to 728): testmachine
wibook: testmachine + sometimes IE6 is nice on a big VGA screen
ephone II (not hpc!): ummm well just fun to have one. but it doesn't get used

the others are older than CE3 so they don't fit my needs, they are for experimenting and museum purposes also they are cheap & fun to play with!

Heh wally you got that almost right. My Jornada was a display/open box unit. It was actually bought by another customer and returned to the store. (I didn't ask why, but a lot of people can't even get PPCs to work, let alone an HPC2000.) Indeed the unit was very mint

but you were told that the guy couldnt configure wifi.. dont you remember?

Oh yeah. I remember.

You're right. In comparison to pocket PCs, HPCs can be dirt cheap! But I can't believe that nobody complained when I spent $450 on an HP iPAQ(No accesories), yet my mom thought I was insane to pay $160 for a MP790(with lots of accessories)... Most people around me think my HPC is a piece of junk, but they don't know what they're missing. I will always be a believer.

For the price of one PPC, you can get a few HPCs... I like that.

But that was pure luck really Who would've thought Staples would carry it still? (Even in 2004) That said I still have a bit of innocent hopeful feeling whenever I walk towards a Staples PDA section - especially at that "place we first met"

An H/PC in a store in 2004?? (Hey, that rhymes!) Who'da thunk it?

Lol. We should make an HPC rap album called "HPC Blues: Discontinued Dreams"... You never know, it just might be the new #1 summer jam!

And we could introduce it publicly by playing it on an H/PC with stereo output, with 200-watt speakers attached.

Cardboard, I think you hit it on the head. One ppc = $450. Time to obsolescence , 6 months. Used value after next models appear, probably 1/2 the purchase price.

HPCs, Most all are depreciated to their bottom prices. Cost, say $150 for a decent one with some goodies. Obsolete? Hardly, with few exceptions hpcs can do all a ppc can, in many cases better. Time to sell your hpc? If kept in good shape you probably get most of your money back.

Looking at it this way it's surprising hpcs aren't more in demand,

I have to disagree about the value thing tho. You cannot compare a brand new PPC that was just introduced to an HPC released many years ago, brand new or used. I would say a PPC released at about the same time as an HPC is usually cheaper, either at the time of introduction (HPCs are a LOT more expensive) or after some time as old stock/new item or used. You can say the same about the depreciations too. Buying a used OR outdated (but not used) PPC can save you a bunch of depreciation costs, same as buying an HPC.

For example, a Cassiopeia E-125 can sell for as much as a Jornada 720 with similar conditions today. Both units were released in the 4th Quarter of 2000, but remember the PPC was $599 and the HPC was a whooping $999! Ah the good old times:

I tend to think anyone paying for $450+ is someone who will lsettle for nothing but new and shiny. Then there's always "it costs more it must be better defects." Give my cheap proven u iyd any day

I would hang onto it. I have several units and all have one defect or another. Heck! I put a scratch on my new $1500.00 laptop yesterday.

As for why do some of us have more than one? Because they are out there. Because "they ain't makin' no mo". Because they are so cool. Because, relatively speaking, they are dirt cheap. Because someone ought to preserve this phase of computer development.

And for the same reason I collect 80-110 year old Eastern European military rifles..................................................I DON'T KNOW!!!!!
