I'd like to try installing Linux on my Jornada 720 so I was wondering how big a CF card I should get.

I don't necessarily want to buy a huge card if I won't need it, but it would be unpleasant to not be able to use Linux properly or install an extra package or two because I lack space.

So, in your experience, what CF size would allow a confortable Linux experience?

FWIW, I haven't decided on a Linux distro/environment. All look good (Familiar w/ GPE or Opie, JLime...).

I think 1GB is the sweet-spot right now (In terms of need / price). I found a 256MB CF card very limiting for NetBSD. And even a 512MB card would not give me enough freedom. PS if you want to consider compilation / swap space, then consider microdrives instead of compactflash cards. They take a bit more power though.

I've thought about microdrives but I'm not exactly keen on them, for the known reasons. I do not intend to do much compilation directly on the Jornada, as for swap... would be nice but from what I read you can do without.

So, 512 MB as the minimum, huh...

Any recommendation from experiences with Familiar? Because I lean towards it.
