Linux on HPC Survery

Doing a bit of research, i'd be obliged if any Jornada 680/690 owners would all answer a few questions:

1) Did you ever consider using Linux on the Jornada?
a) No, Windows CE was good enough
b) Yes, and did
c) No, too complication to install
d) No, no up-to-date or active versions
e) Yes/No, other, please specify

2) If you said "too complicated to install" - which would make it eaiser?
a) ActiveSync based installer (theoretically possible)
b) Compact-Flash-Reader desktop PC based installer (in alpha)
c) Using a bootdisk/live cd/exisiting Linux PC (usual method)
d) Getting someone else to do it for you

3) Should Linux on the Jornada...
a) Act as a PDA/Organiser
b) Act as a mini-laptop, e.g. internet + word processing + media
c) Act as a Development platform
d) Other, please specify

but if nothing else, 680 is ok too. the 728 with 64 mb ram and faster cpu would just be much more efficient..

I'm not a jornada owner, but I wanted to add a question I would ask if I were thinking of trying linux: "does standby work properly"? As in, "will the batteries run down in a few days even if I don't use it because linux can't put it into a deep sleep mode"?

Sorry to intterrupt, but I was always curious about this and had trouble finding info. (On my mp780, I have read it is impossible for netbsd to put the device into a deep sleep due to hardware limitations, so that makes it pretty much unusable for my organizer / word processor use since the batteries run down after a day or so, I think)

AFAIK suspend has been working for several versions now in JLime (for Jornada 6xx HPCs and soon 7xx series). But to date, there is complications with getting wireless drivers implemented with the newest builds, but that is currently being worked on by Kristoffer.

1) b (that is, I'm anxiously looking forward to Linux on J720, but haven't tried to do an install, yet)
2) a (I didn't say too complicated, but if you want it to be used, it should be ActiveSync-installable - the image should fit nicely on a CF card, with room to spare -- something on the order of DamnSmallLinux - 50Mb)
3) a AND b -- I want my J720 to be both an organizer AND a laptop. The lack of a good browser holds it back -- it doesn't play well with https and java -- Mozilla Minimo looks like it may (someday) fill that bill.

Also, something like "loadlin.exe" would be great -- run it from within WinCE to fire up linux -- reboot to get back to WinCE... (That may already exist -- I'm not up on all of the features of the current state of Linux on Jornada).

It works sort of like that, except by starting Linux the RAM is formatted so the device is basically hard-resetted.


JLime has Konqueor for Opie, which supports the same features as the desktop version.


With the Opie GUI it is approximatly 30mb. Not too bad a size really.

Arf, that's a mistake. Option 1 is clearly B. I have right now 720degrees installed at my Jornada 720. Could an admin delete the post?

1 - B (JLime is one of the primary reasons I bought my 680.)
2 - B (I'm sure this would be the best option for most people. I use linux on the desktop full time, so installing the old fashioned way is not too big a deal to me personally.)
3 - B (A modern browser and desktop would be awesome on a device so portable.)
