Just a quick question for those who have been running Linux on their HPC.
In your opinions, how much space is required to get a base system with X, dillio, or minimo, and an editor or two?
Do you think a 2GB CF card is sufficient?
Thanks in advance for any replies.

2GB is huge. You can run something like DSL with <64mb CF, or a full KDE environment with <512mb CF>

I am running mine with a 1 gig card, and that seems huge. I would imagine that anything larger than that would be just extra play room. Maybe if you were compiling on the Jornada or something...

How do you get DSL to run on a MIPS machine?

I don't think he knows what he is talking about.

DSL is uses a compressed file system, on read-only media. To do similar on a compactflash card would have catastrophic effects. Besides, a machine with as little power as these would be unable to compress anything in a reasonable amount of time.

KDE? We can run the old version, but it still takes over 200mb of uncompressed space. For some reason, my earlier post recommending 512mb or above did not make it through.

I did not mean to say you can run DSL on a MIPS, but to say that you can fit a lot of functionality in a very small space.

With regards to the compressed file system - it works beautifully on CF if you ask me. I use CF in all my embedded systems, sometimes with multiple partitions (one RO, one RW), other times with a single compressed FS that is then mounted RO. Since CF has near unlimited reads but severely limit writes, a RO fs is the best way to keep it from thrashing the card.

On the CE 2.11 and up you can have up to 32 GB memory card partitions.

thats right...

however answers to the questions..

1. will a card that i can use in a vid camera work in a jornada HPC?

- your card is SD.. you'd better buy a CF card or a pcmcia-sd adapter.

2. does jornada have any internal storage space?

- yes, 32 mb but that counts the program ram too so lets say its less

3. i only want basics, no internet or shiznit like that, jus text and spreadsheet and ya know, maybe paint, basic windws software

- you wont need more than 128 mb then. but who knows. i can fit on a 512 mb card but 1 GB is more comfortable - i have a lot of stuff...
