Hello folks,
I recently obtained a Cassiopeia A-11 from eBay - because I wanted to see Windows CE 1.0 - some kind of back to the roots, as I always have been fascinated by Windows CE.

To my suprise there was Windows CE 2.0 on it. Then I removed the ROM chip (from the interior slot, that´s left from the backup-battery - that is the ROM-chip - isn´t it?) - but then the device refuses turning on.
Shouldn´t it simply load Windows CE 1.0 then? I also cut it off from all power for about 10 Minutes - no luck - nothing happens.

Or is Windows CE 1.0 on a rom-chip too, so that there´s no ROM at all, after removing the 2.0 one?

In essencer you have pulled the system's RAM and OS out. At this stage the RAM and ROM are on the same chip - often still are.

You will either need to get the chip, or swap it for a 1.0 version.

Thank you very much for your quick response, Amie? (That´s your real name?)

So - is it worth trying to find (or even swap mine for it) a CE 1.0 - ROM Chip, or is there no real optical difference between CE 1.0 and 2.0 (except the version number, and that it´s less compatible, worse and so on?)

Regards
Jens

It is unlikely that a ROM board will turn up on eBay - you may get lucky. If you wanted to see 1.0, it's not going to be expesive just to get another one.

1.0 is very under supported, not as intuitive to use (widely seen as a public beta) and not as interoperable - connectivity is difficult. 1.0 support ended with Windows 95/NT4 SP3 where as 2.0 is still Windows XP compatible.

not as intuitive to use? to me it looks exactly the same as 2.0...
difficult connectivity?? first thing i do on every device is connect to the internet... an EPOC ER1 device is harder to connect to the internet than a CE 1.0 device.

Doesn't have a cascading start menu, diffferent file explorer, no cab installater, no on device installer management, stripped out registry, only word and excel if you call that intuitive, you might want to consider glasses when you have to colour checked

If you like dial-up modems then CE1 is fine. But please show me how you connect it to an ethernet, bluetooth or wifi connection or Windows 2000 or XP without resorting to un-documented hacks

I have a CE1.0 A11. Can the software be upgraded to 2.0 without adding any hardware?

Well, if we live near enough to each other I'd do a swap for my little ROM chip... If you REALLY wanted to do it
