| Windows CE 2.00 was the only officially supported Windows CE platform for use with the 3C589 series.
It is unusual for reports of problems with the device to surface, however if you need support for any of the 589 familily under Windows CE 2.00 please use this thread.
Windows CE 2.1x H/PC Pro and Windows CE 3.0 HPC2000 users please see the relevant threads.
Which 3Com cards work with the Windows CE 2.00 Driver?
See the Ethernet section of the HPC:Factor HCL for a list.
Where can I download the official driver?
The official driver can be downloaded from http://www.3com.com/
Where can I download the HPC:Factor driver?
The driver is available from CESDH0009
Why is there a HPC:Factor Driver, isn't it the same version?
The driver file for the CE 2.00 release is identical, however HPC:Factor have rewritten the installer to bypass the installation requirement of having a Windows CE Services CD - without which you cannot install the official driver.
What else do I need to get started?
Before you attempt to being using the network, you need to install the Windows CE 2.0 Network layer. H/PC 2.0 devices do not come with a networking layer. The networking layer is available in parts from OEM's, however, HPC:Factor has written a new Service Pack for Windows CE 2.00 called the NetworkSP (NSP ). The NSP also includes all official updates released since SP1.
You can download the NSP from here
- Follow CESDH0022 to perform a EPROM reset of the 3C589 http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/h/0022.asp
- Ensure that the NSP is installed correctly on the device
- Do not attempt to install the driver or NSP onto a Storage Card, they must be installed into main RAM in the default instalaltion folders
- If prompted for a driver name type 3c589.dll for a SH3 processor or 3c589m.dll for a MIPS processor
- Ensure that your device is providing enough current to the card. The 589 series is not a low power device. It is recommened that you troubleshoot on AC power.
- Check the card works correctly in another H/PC or Windows PC
- Backup the device using ActiveSync, perform a hard reset as per http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/s/0034.asp or your manufacturers instructions. Test the card on the reset device. If it still does not work, you can restore your backup to restore existing functionality
- Check the network cable, replacing it if possible
- Check the card dongle connectors
- Ensure that the PCMCIA slot on the H/PC works with another PCMCIA card - a Storage Card (Flash) or a Analog Modem are usually best for this purpose as they do not usually require drivers

| Dear C:Amie,
install the official driver from 3com, take a reistry backup, hard reset, install the HPCFactor driver, make a registry backup and compare the two. I think you should see that a lot of keys are missin'.

| I wrote the thing, I'm well aware of the driver differences.
The missing keys are the pnpid data, that are not required for operation. |

| But the difference in running is:
With the original driver, the dongle lights constant and a icon pops in the taskbar, then the HPC hangs
With the HPCFactor driver the dongle blinks and after a second the HPC hangs:-(

| Installed SP1,soft reset, then NSP,soft reset again, then official driver, reset again, then vxutil, soft reset again, connecting with ac line to router with 3m 1:1 and crosslink.
both the dongle flashes, the router doesn't change, nothing in logs, no IP adress via DHCP(vxutil).
next run with set ip:
the same as with dhcp.
any idea why this is so??(maybe hard-coded paths in driver source!!)
Marco
PS: C:Amie, do you have the driver sources? |

| fragenmensch,
The drivers work. You are the only person I have ever had who is telling me otherwise under CE 2.00 who didn't have a broken card/pcmcia slot.
I have two 3C589's sitting infront of me right now and have been using them in CE2 since 2000. I have also tested countless other 589 cards with the HPC:Factor driver and have never had a problem under 2.00.
Unless you are attepting to install the driver or the NSP onto a CF card, there is nothing wrong with the drivers path statement.
Equally on that for anyone else - you should not be attempting to install a stack driver anywhere other than \windows.
Did the device lock-up this time? |

| I mean this is because I have got a GERMAN W/CE so that this aybe is the bug.
And I have installed all the things in windows except vxutil.
Oh, the PDA didn't lock up this time..

| Right! This information would have been useful some time ago
The driver is not reported to be all that stable on non-US systems, might I suggest you add your location to your forum profile
I see no obvious hard coded statements in the dll - and no I don't have the source.
Try the attached. Attachments ---------------- 3C589.DLL (34KB - 18 downloads) |

| Ok, I'll try it;I have compared your DLL and the official one; in OFFSET 97 there is a difference (one is 21, the other 1F).
Marco
EDIT:
Okay, I killed the old dll, replaced with the new one, then soft reset. I inserted card, question for driver, dongle flashing. I type "3c589.dll", dongle stops flashing, nothing happens:-(
