I have a MIPS -based handheld PC running HPC2000 and would like to use a USB data storage device (like a CRUZER). Is there a manufacturer of usb data storage devices that provides a driver for their device to run on a handheld PC? Anyone know of a generic driver that might work?

Yes there is. You are in luck.

There are many guys who use Sigmarion II (a H/PC 2000 device) who are connecting all sorts of USB devices, which include mass storage devices and even CD-ROMs.

Sorry, the site is in Japanese, and I translated one of the thread there.

Quote from http://www.nariten.com/usbsig2bbs/wforum.cgi?no=690&reno=no&oya=690...
USB Memory works in Sigmarion II

I used USBMSC.DLL and USBDISK6.DLL and made

IBM 128MB USB2.0 Memory Key (P/N 22P8998)

work.

Because it is USB 2.0, It did not recognize first, and I was searching for othere USB memories, but when I plugged in today, it was okay (although it took about 30 seconds to recognize)

The IBM 32MB USB Memory Key(P/N 22P5296) (USB1.1) did not recognize on Sigmarion II only the led shone.

The forum is in Japanese, but if you use Babelfish, you might be able to translate, although not necessarily literate enough. If you want some part translated, just ask me, I'd be glad to help.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the tips. I tried it on my Pencentra 200 (MIPS) and it did not work. I suspect that the Sigmarion is an ARM processor? I found on another forum a comment that the driver only works on ARM processors, not MIPS. Thanks again.

Since I only really need to use the USB for large file access/transfer, I've chosen the Kanguru microdrive USB to CF as an alternative.
http://kanguru.com/cfmicrodrive.html

I don't have it yet but it should work for files that do not require conversion.

Hi. Sigmarion II uses MIPS MIPS VR4131/200MHz CPU. Well, I'm sorry that it didn't work. There are several other USB mass storage device that were reported there, but I don't have the Sigmarion II device myself, so I can't guarantee anything. The reported devices on the bbs included:

Princeton Technology
 FlashDio ◎
USBMemory
 TREK Thumbdrive ◎
Takes 1 Minute to recognize?

USB Memory
 IO-DATA
 EasyDisk USB-64ED2

USB Memory
V drive

USB Memory that is being sold as Sigmarion II instant recognizable at Yahoo auction
http://page12.auctions.yahoo.co.jp/jp/auction/p5585844

But Sorry, all these infomation can't be tested, and all the reports from other guys were using Sigmarion II, but good luck anyway.

Tsubasasan, arigatougozaimasita for the information. I downloaded the usbmsc.dll from Deje's site. I assume that the Deje driver is one-in-the-same as the driver the Sigmarion users have shown to work. The problem is that I received a message that the driver could not install on my device - incorrect device type. I have considered tying to copy the file out of the cab and properly rename the dll on the device. I have not tried that yet but intend to in a few days.

I will check the mass storage devices that you suggested. Perhaps one of them is supplied with a driver for HPC2000. Thanks again!

Could someone tell me how to download these usb drivers, or email them to me? (jbosch222@yahoo.com). I looked at the links but I do not have a clue where the drivers are.

Thanks very much.

Does anyone know if I can get a usb pcmcia card onto ce 2000? It would be nice to try to get a usb gps receiver that I have made for laptops to work on my j720.

I uploaded a MIPS hpc2k USB package here. It works on the Intermec and others. Ask c-Amie to post it for all to download. AFAIK it's freeware. As for ARM devices with a native USB port google for the deje drivers. They worked fine on my Casio e200 when I had it.

Well it would be great if C-Amie would post em. I'd like to give it a try because I cannot get the Deje driver to work on my 6651 or pencentra 200. I now have the kanguru usb/cf device and it works conveniently to plug into the front of the desktop, copy a file to my 1G IBM micro drive - then I just pop the microdrive into the cf slot on the 6651. Makes for quick transfers vs using the serial port. Wallace - what did you upload? Drivers from ??

I really don't know the full usb functionality of my jornada 720. I know ce 2000 has some usb support because I sync it that way, but only with the cradle. Could I just pop in a usb pc card and then use my spy pen? hehe

Guys! Be still my aching heart.
I did post them.

Here they are again.
As I said in the other thread, thanks Wally T for the file. I found the original distributer though, so credit where it's due I decided to just post their links:

The site that published the archive you sent, is here:
http://www.softclub.jp/~zoro/ce/

Direct Link:
http://www.softclub.jp/~zoro/ce/usb020522.lzh

You may need to add the following registry settings for it:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\USB\ClientDrivers\Mass_Storage_Class]
"DLL"="USBMSC.DLL"
"Prefix"="DSK"
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\USB\ClientDrivers\Mass_Storage_Class\2]
"DLL"="USBDISK6.DLL"
"Prefix"="DSK"
"FSD"="UDFS.DLL"
"Folder"="USB Disk"
"IOCTL"=dword:4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Drivers\USB\ClientDrivers\Mass_Storage_Class\6]
"DLL"="USBDISK6.DLL"
"Prefix"="DSK"
"FSD"="FATFS.DLL"
"Folder"="USB Disk"
"IOCTL"=dword:4

I am very sorry C-Amie! I must not have looked in the right place. Thank you for the re-post. I downloaded the lzh, melted it, copied the dll's to the windows folder on the device. When prompted for the driver upon inserting the USB memory stick, entered USBMSC.DLL. The led flashed (once) but the USB device does not show up. Waited a couple of minutes to see if it would be recognized - nope. I checked the registry and it appears that all entries created correctly/automatically and match your suggestion. Tried the above on both an Intermec 6651 and Pencentra 200 with same results. I located a more recent version of the FATFS.DLL and tried it as well (called it FATFS2.DLL and made the appropriate changes in the registry.) No success. Soft resets between all installations and changes of course. I tried 3 different USB memory sticks by 3 manufacturers - none were recognized. Any ideas? Wally T - you were successful with the Intermec? Thanks.

Hey, nothing to apologise for. Donesn't hurt to make it more visible.

It'd be neat if you guys with USB on your devices could get a working setup going. Keep at it!

Well just when I thought I'd have to brush-up on my Japanese - success. I had an old USB memory stick adaptor in the drawer, Lexar Jumpdrive, and gave it a try. Works great even with a 256MB memory stick installed! The USBMSC driver is a little pickier about the device than I thought it would be. Speculation - the devices listed by Tsubasa above probably work... others ??? (( Hey, C-Amie, your forums are great. Keep up the good work. I'm still working that AR issue. The Ansyr software is hard to beat though; their pdf viewer works flawlessly on my MIPS machines.))

The only usb functionality my HPC has at all is through the dock, and even that is not proving my j720 as being able to host a usb device. I just want to know if I could go and pick up a usb card, plug it into the pcmcia slot, and use a usb storage device. I think ce 2000 should have the driver built in...
