I have a hp Jornada 680. Ever since I got it (a few months ago, but the device is a good 5-years old) I've had a few problems with the touchscreen. The screen itself is fine, but every so often it would occasionally become uncalibrated. Sometimes, drawing lines, it would draw a small segment towards the bottom left when I lifted the stylus. It did this only occasionally, just a minor annoyance.

Now, today, for whatever reason, it's going batty on me. After a little while, it would start drawing lines from where I started to draw a line and where I ended, and these extra lines all lead to a point in the bottom left. It's horrible, becuase now it tries to drag anything and everything to that corner. Clicking has become a chore now.

I've heard from a good friend that touchscreens work on the principles of resistance. Depending on how much resistance is between the edge of the screen and the stylus determines the position. He also said that it can wear out over time.

Could I have a dying screen? Or might it be a loose wire (a long shot, I know)?

Thanks for your time.

Well there is always the chance that the problem is a short or a loose wire. Some devices run the cables for the screen around the hinge (J600 and 700 series for example) with excessive movement of the screen the hinge can rub or worse and cause problems.

However the most likly cause is either that part of the digitiser mambrane is trapped or just plain damaged. If you can get the front of the screen off, give the screen a good wash down with an LCD cleaner (look at the hp recommendations first though before purchasing anything), very carefully. Check the connections etc. Look for anything trapped between the protective layer and the digitiser.

Also there is a chance that your stylus has worn to a point and has scratched into the membrane. Please check that and if needed investigate a new stylus.

Lastly if you get it sorted, look to invest in a screen protector. They're woth it.

Well, I've used it for a few more days here. Right now, it's getting even more random than before. And actually, for the past two days or so, I haven't noticed it at all. I fear the screen may be wearing out, since a light touch does some very wierd things. Drawing a circle very lightly will throw lines in almost all directions. Pressing slightly heavier, espically at the beginging and ending of the stroke, does wonders. Also, it does it much more if I hold it with my right hand and place several figers behind the screen to hold it. If I open the screen more and hold it by the base, nothing happens.

The screen seems to be in good condition. there are some minor scruff marks and very light scratches, but none around the problem area.

I'm going to leave it alone for now, since it seems to be much better (and the fact I really don't feel like ripping it apart). I'm going to be buying a semi-busted 680 from a friend for parts, just in case (The latch holding the Type II card cady gizmo is missing.)

I am going to buy some new stencils. Is ebay my only option?

Thanks again!

Good plan.

As for new stylus's. If you ask real, real nice, and depending on who you talk to. You can squirrel them out of Jornada / Ipaq Tech Support. You'll be needing a credit card though. They send you a nice handwritten semi-transparent VAT invoice... hp UK do anyway.
