Samsung have announced the technical availability of the world's first 32 GB solid state disk (SSD) drive. The new 1.8" flash technology is designed to directly go up against de facto Hard Disk technologies. The Samsung chip boasts read speeds of more than twice that of conventional mechanical hard disks and with power consumption up to 95% less than a mechanical solution, the future prospects of a proven solid-state drive look promising.

The NAND flash technology offers hope to PDA users of greater storage capacity eventually being seen in the Compact Flash space, pushing the abilities of PDA technology even further, and arguably closer to the capability of a low end laptop. For Handheld PC users, the new technology if ported to a compatible specification could revolutionise the market place. However it is also worth pointing out that such technology is also at the ends of the Microsoft FAT32 File System driver's capability, making it unlikely that legacy PDA's will be able to make use of further innovations in this sector.
