HPC:Factor needs your helpHandheld PC News Posted 13 years ago | Community | Chris Tilley 1 comment
![]() Despite recent setbacks, the site continues to soldier on and our uptime and performance over the last few days has not been too bad. This is good news, however we have had a couple of complete lockups because of the overloaded state of the server which was already fairly overloaded before HPC:Factor landed at its door step.
The site has always been free, and we have always resisted frustration and poor taste that goes with banner and popup advertising, and so since its inception HPC:Factor has always been funded by its owners. We have provided hardware, software, time and support which all come at a cost, and unfortunately we are at a point where we can no longer sustain this investment for new the new hardware that is required to improve the efficiency of the site. For the first time in our nearly 11 year history we are turning to you to ask for your support in raising enough money to ensure that we can keep HPC:Factor on your screens for the foreseeable future. We are seeking to raise between £600.00 and £800.00 so that we can bring a new server on-line with the necessary horse power to see us into the future and so that we have the necessary storage systems (RAID mirror) to ensure that we maintain safe and reliable backups. Anything above this figure that we get will remain available to the site, and will be used to seek improvements in the service that we offer the community, the specification of the final server or will contribute towards the bandwidth costs/domain renewal for the site. In the mean time, we will continue to try and get the site up and running properly as it was before we dropped out at the end of January. For those looking to register with us, unfortunately we have had to close the site to new registrations for the short-term. We apologise for the inconvenience caused as a result. Comments on this articleI meant to attach a note to my donation, but I just wanted to say THANK YOU! This site has been such a remarkable resource for me over the past few years as I've bounced from device to device trying to get everything I could from them. I'm happy to be getting a Jornada 690 in the next few days and I'm looking forward to delving through this amazing site and finding out what great things I can do with it that I never knew about. Thanks again to everyone who has worked so hard to provide this resource to the HPC community! |
