The Register asks 'Where's my 21st-century Psion?'

Handheld PC News

The Register's Liam Proven has posted a new article on one of the so called forgotten form factors of technology.

Titled, "Bugger the jetpack, where's my 21st-centry Psion? Forgotten form factors #2: The Handheld PC", the article takes a road trip through the history of keyboard equipped devices - focusing predominantly on the clamshell - from the DOS and pre-DOS era right up to Psion and of course our very own Windows CE based Handheld PC.

Citing the decline and fall of the form factor culminating in the form factors Windows CE era, on page 4 Liam links to reviews here on HPC:Factor as he strolls down memory lane - although we would of course argue that the form factor will never die completely; not while we are still around anyway.

If you are interested in the development of the clamshell form factor, it's well worth a quick read as Liam draws the conclusion that the market seems ripe for Android to purposefully step into the shoes of its contemporaries of old.

I got back to HPC:Factor last week just to see how things were going on here after a long time and I got interested in this article and decided to read it. After reading it and having a awesome moment of nostalgia I decided to revive my Jornada 720 (which had JLime installed and I used it as a tiny Linux machine once a month) format it, install a bunch of programs I had backed up the CABs and start a new project with it (which involves RS-232 and a Arduino).

The comment above made me want to install Jlime again on my MP900C.

Also, I think I'll do some work on BOCHS emulation of old Linux on my Sigmarion 3.
