New WiFi Voice Communication Software to Support Windows CE

Handheld PC News

WindowsForDevices.com reports the upcoming release of software by Wavelink Corporation that will allow voice communication between two computers within a local WiFi network. Included will be versions for Windows CE and Windows Mobile as well as for Windows 2000, XP, and Vista. The only hardware requirements are 802.11a/b/g connectivity, microphone input, and speaker output. Only the client-side program is required - communication is strictly peer-to-peer directly between the two computers.

Wavelink Corporation has not yet released details regarding pricing or system requirements, even though it has announced an expected release of the software during January of 2009. Nonetheless, we could be looking at adding an intriguing new function to Windows CE devices: walkie-talkie communication.

Nice to have a CE version of software to talk to people on my "local WIFI network". Maybe a version that works over the internet is in the future. Skype type software for CE!

Well, it's February now, and I still don't see anything official from Wavelink about a release being out. I'll keep checking from time to time, and anyone else who stumbles upon any new info about this is welcome to start a discussion thread.

Wavelink's site now states that the release has been moved to April.

It's out now, and a free demo is available. However, the Wavelink site has managed to keep pricing information well-hidden - it looks like you have to e-mail the sales department just to get the price.
