In a surprise move this evening, Alpaxo software has announced the immediate suspension of development on the popular RedGear compatibility layer for Windows CE.

Citing shrinking market share for Windows CE companion devices, extended development time over that of standard application design and detrimental market impact from the hacking community as the main reasons for the decision, Kirk Meyer, lead developer and owner of Alpaxo software has made a decision that has confronted many Handheld PC developers in recent years; one of economics vs. desire to remain writing for the community.

For existing users, Alpaxo will continue to provide technical support to you until 1st December 2009 and at the time of writing, the program is still available to purchase for Windows CE 3.0, 4.1 and 4.2.

While I understand the reasons behind this decision, I am still greatly disappointed as I was looking forward to the next version of RedGear.

I don't spend much time using CE anymore, but I do think that this is a shame. I hope isotherm has managed to recoup some of his costs. Do we know exactly how long we have until we can no longer purchase Redgear? Will it become abandonware/freeware? If we (monetarily) bribe isotherm to work with cmonex, will it be included in her mp900c rom?

I was tempted at one point to buy an Apple Newton, as there exists a WiFi driver for Orinoco cards. Unfortunately, this can no longer be bought, and is not free, meaning I cannot get it :( PLEASE don't let this go the same way, for the sake of us all.

RedGear won't ever become freeware, and as for so-called "abandonware," that is not a legal status of copyright, and I will not tolerate it either.

So long as people are continuing to purchase, I will continue to offer it for sale. But at present, it looks like purchasing has tapered off, and I may discontinue sales at the same time support is discontinued.
