Alpaxo Software Logo
It has been over a year since Alpaxo Software announced it would be closing its doors, with the winding down of the company comes another milestone in that closure. In a week or so the domain name will expire, ending the support commitment that Alpaxo has with its users.

It is always sad to see a developer exit, but we wish Kirk well in his endeavours.

As a final parting gesture, Kirk has made available Alpaxo software's products - including RedGear and Quackenchat to the community as part of our exemptionware initiative.

The downloads are now available exclusively through the HPC:Factor download centre as of this morning.

Sad. The passing of Alpaxo is the last hurrah for hpcs.

Remember how the rumor of a modern browser or other exciting app would set the forum afire until the rumour flamed out? That would happen again and again. How about all the hacking we did to squeeze every last bit, literally, from our little beasts? Those were some days.

We took our trusty little gadgets everywhere and amazed random strangers with them. We surfed, typed notes, enjoyed mp3s, played games, all the while hoping just one good developer would realize a hot new app might turn back the outgoing tide against the hpcs.
...

We were sure just one killer app would re-ignite the market for hpcs and spawn the domino effect. More users would clamour for software and developers would jump in to meet the demand. We kept waiting, and waiting...

Then Alpaxo created an amazing app. Maybe not the "perfect" browser we pined for but an incredible tool to open the floodgates to a whole library of new feature laden programs. The majority of the hpc users just *yawned*. No other developers are going to invest time and money on the hpc platform after seeing Alpaxo's pitiful returns.

In short, Alpaxo pounded on our doo...

with the last hope to kickstart hpcs and we ignored it. Maybe it was too late already with the plethora of netbooks, cheap chinese hpcs and even cheap phones that can smoke the best hpcs ever made. We'll never know.

Now we've no need to wonder ever again if a "killer" app would reboot hpcs into a "must have" status, ala Iphones. Nope. Uh Uh. Not happening.

Thanks anyways Alpaxo for giving it a shot.
