There is some exciting news this morning out of UK based Bye Design, creators of the award winning SpreadCE for Windows CE as well as Pocket PC, mainstream Windows and Android.

SpreadCE has been updated to version 3.12. The release heralds a first for the Windows CE spreadsheet world, as it includes a complete VBA (Visual Basic for Applications) runtime macro engine. The engine can be used to automate, enrich and enhance spreadsheets as well as perform spreadsheet / data manipulation operations through procedural code and standard programming logic instead of simply relying on built-in functions.

The advantage of VBA is that it allows you to approach data programmatically through the creation of your own functions, procedures and macros using the approachable Visual Basic (VB) programming language in an entirely customisable, extensible way.

The creation of a fully fledged VBA engine for SpreadCE has been a labour of love for lead developer Stephen Bye and it unquestionably represents a huge accomplishment for him and Bye Design.

A trial of SpreadCE can be downloaded directly from the Bye Design home page. If you are a registered owner of an older version, you can upgrade to the new 3.12 release for free. Registering the program as a new user costs $20.00 USD (£16.53 GBP, €19.01 EUR, ¥2,985.95 JPY est.) and is well worth it for anyone who uses a spreadsheet on their CE device as SpreadCE is far superior to the default and highly limited Pocket Excel.

Bye Design are keen to hear from the community in relation to further enhancing the programme as well as in helping them to finding and squash any bugs that may still be lurking in the engine. They ask that you report any bugs or issues via their support forum. You can also support the continued development of SpreadCE through a one-time or on-going donation via the links on the technical support forum should you further wish to honour the work that has gone into the creation of the tool.

I encourage all Windows CE users to have a look at the new release and if it is useful to you, please do consider purchasing a license or donating so that we can continue to see further development in the future.

I think the best part is it works with .xlsx files! Definitely a great feature. App is very well coded because it’s super fast. Even in CE2.0
