Description

So what is the PocketMVP(Pocket Music and Video Player) ? Well it's an open source movie player based on the popular "Divx" format from Divx Networks. Recently the player has been enhanced to support the original DIVX video format as well. You're asking: "What good is video without audio", well we also have incorporated the MAD decoder ,which is one of the higher quality and best performing opensource MP3 decoders available. Currently this project is hosted by ProjectMayo in their CVS library and official releases can be obtained there. This site is dedicated to providing more information about this project and as a hosting site for current alpha releases of the player, as ProjectMayo can only release new binaries intermitently at current. The project is now at a stage where enhancements and improvements are frequent and they need to be tested on all the supported device prior to official release. So that's what you'll find here aside from general information about PocketMVP.

So why did we do this and why should you use it, when there are already a bunch of media players available from big name companies, including microsoft. Well, there are several reasons for this. First, until recently I owned an E-100 from Casio and the only video player support for it was Casio's MPEG video player. Second, all of the current players for Windows CE are closed source products, so as an engineer I am interested in working with this technology and this was the only avenue open. Third, I and others were down right sick of Microsoft's closed file format(WMV). It wasn't bad enough that the players source is closed, but it's prectically impossible to do anything with their media file format without using their less than adequite toolset.

Oh Yes!!! I almost forgot the most important reason to use PocketMVP over Microsoft or anybody else for that matter. We have between 2 and 10 times their playback performance depending on the device. On an E-125 Microsofts Player can handle about 8fps with audio at a resolution of 204 X 80. We on the other hand can easily handle 30 fps with audio at 240 X 128 and 15fps with audio at 320 X 176. So basically WE KICKED THEIR ASS!!! and we're just getting started!!!
