More Info
WARNING: The steps outlined in this article are potentially VERY DANGEROUS. They should not be attempted by inexperienced users.
Lithium battery packs are potentially explosive when exposed to heat or shock.
If you follow this guide you must read it in full before attempting to under take any work and you do so at your own risk.
The three hardware buttons on the Jornada 720 are represented to the system as extended keyboard keys. The mapping is performed in the Windows CE registry at the path HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\Keys
The three buttons map as follows
Volume Up |
40D1 |
Volume Down |
40D2 |
Play/Pause |
40D3 |
By reassigning the keyboard keys at these addresses, you can re-define the 'on key down' function for each.
Converting Volume Up/Down into Next/Previous Track
- Open your preferred registry editor.
- Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\Keys.
- Scroll down to the number 40D1 and highlight it.
- Double tap on the registry key in the right pane "(Default)" and change the data field from "\Windows\VolumeUp" to "\Windows\Next.lnk"
- Scroll down to the number 40D2 and highlight it.
- Double tap on the registry key in the right pane "(Default)" and change the data field from "\Windows\VolumeDown" to "\Windows\Previous.lnk"
- The next time you play Windows Media Player and press the "+" button, the next song on the play list will play. The "-" button will launch the previous song on the play list.
Reprogramming your keys for Voice Recorder
This first method launches Voice Recorder, but does not initiate recording.
- Open the registry editor.
- Open HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\Keys.
- Scroll down to the number 40D3 and highlight it.
- Double tap on the registry key in the right pane "(Default)" and change the data field from "\Windows\PausePlay.lnk" to "\Windows\voicstub.exe"
This allows a user to launch Voice Recorder, but only works when the unit is turned on first and no password is enabled!
This second method allows you to press the button and keep it depressed to record a memo and release to stop recording without turning on the unit and entering your password. This modification does not require registry modifications
- Launch HP Hot Keys
- Highlight/select "Hot key 3"
- In the "Assign to:" field, click on "Browse"
- Find the voicstub.exe executable and select it. Tap on "Ok"
- Tap on "Ok"
- With the unit off, push and hold down the Voice Recorder Hot key and presto!
Converting the Volume Up/Down buttons into Application Launch keys
You can re-map the (default) value of the registry keys to any Windows CE executable or any registered file type accessed via a Windows Explorer shortcut (a LNK file).
Create a LNK file by
- ALT + Tapping on the program or file that you wish to launch in Windows Explorer e.g.
\Windows\Calc.exe
- Clicking copy
- Navigate to a directory to store the shortcut file e.g.
\Storage Card\Shortcuts
- Tap Edit and Paste Shortcut
- Rename the shortcut as required e.g.
Calculator
- Under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Shell\Keys set the default value to the path and name of the shortcut suffixed with .lnk e.g.
\Storage Card\Shortcuts\Calculator.lnk
