HPC Factor Glossary of Terms

HPC Factor uses many computing terms and acronyms that some users may be unfamiliar with. This Glossary aims to provide users with the information necessary to make full use of the site.

ActiveSync The Windows CE desktop host Synchronisation client originally released in 1999 to replace Windows CE services. ActiveSync is now up to version 3.8 for Windows CE 2.0 to CE 4.2 devices and 4.5 for Windows CE 3.0 to Windows CE 5.0 devices.
ActiveSync (1) Windows CE mobile device client that connects to the Desktop ActviceSync synchronisation client in order to exchange database and file information
APN Access Point Name - A term used in GPRS to specify a cellular service providers data address on the cellular network
AvantGo AvantGo is a way of displaying and keeping up-to-date with Internet content on your mobile device. AvantGo has an ActiveSync module to allow for web site updates to be delivered directly to the mobile device. It is similar to Microsoft Mobile Channels

BitMap A image file where each pixel's attributes are mapped according to the Bit depth of the specified image. As a result of each pixel being recorded in the file, BitMaps can be comparatively large compared with other image formats

Virtual Network Computing Open source remote access protocol originally designed by AT&T UK for connecting to X servers interactively. VNC was later ported to multiple platforms, including Viewers for Windows CE.
