Overview

After upgrading to ActiveSync version 3.7 or 3.7.1 you may receive an error after you cradle your Handheld PC and attempt to Synchronise with Microsoft Outlook on the host while it is closed.

Microsoft Outlook Synchronisation
ActiveSync cannot log on to Microsoft Outlook. Make sure Microsoft Outlook is installed and functioning correctly. You may need to restart your computer.

-or-

Microsoft Outlook Synchronisation cannot be started because you are not able to log on to the network and access information. Restart your desktop computer and synchronise again. If the problem persists, contact your network administrator.

Alternatively Outlook may also crash out with the following crash log being generated:

AppName: outlook.exe AppVer: 9.0.0.6604 ModName: mso9.dll
ModVer: 9.0.0.6926 Offset: 000ed857

Under some circumstances the error may only be presented when Outlook on the host system has not been started during the current user session. If Outlook on the host is currently running then synchronisation may occur as expected.

Solution

This error can occur if you are running Outlook 2000, 2002 (XP) or 2003 with the Microsoft Personal Folders Backup add-in installed.

The Microsoft Personal Folders Backup add-in is not compatible with Microsoft ActiveSync. You should remove the Personal Folders Backup add-in from your computer by using the following steps.

Remove the Outlook Backup Add-in

  1. Disconnect your Handheld PC
  2. Start Outlook, and then click Options on the Tools menu.
  3. Click the Other tab, and then select Advanced Options.
  4. Open COM Add-Ins, click Outlook Backup Add-in, and then select Remove.
  5. Close Outlook and restart your computer.

Remove the Outlook Personal Folders Backup Utility

  1. Close Microsoft Outlook and disconnect your Handheld PC
  2. Open the Add / Remove Programs applet from the Windows Control Panel.
  3. Select Microsoft Outlook Personal Folders Backup, and then click Remove.
  4. Follow the on-screen instruction to complete the uninstallation process.
  5. Reboot your computer

As this will remove the ability to automatically backup your Outlook PST data you should consult the Microsoft KB article Q196492 for instructions on creating successful backups of Outlook data
