Microsoft Portrait cannot see NetMeeting clients on the ILS server

This article discusses the use of Microsoft Portrait for the Handheld PC when communicating with Microsoft NetMeeting 2.11, 3.0 and 3.01 over an Internet Locator Server.

Both Microsoft Portrait and Microsoft NetMeeting support the use of a Internet Locator Server (ILS) to provide a real-time directory of connected users. ILS is designed to provide a group directory allowing users to share information and communicate in a digital 'phone book'.

When attempting to communicate between NetMeeting and Portrait, the Portrait Client will not be able to see any NetMeeting users listed in the ILS Directory. This behaviour is by design.

Microsoft Portrait and Microsoft NetMeeting use similar directory protocols to provide group lists, however due to differences in the implemented protocols the two applications are not interpretable. Portrait does not support the use of the H.323 communications protocol and thus cannot connect to NetMeeting clients.

Users wishing to initiate a conversation with a Portrait user should install Microsoft Portrait for Windows.

Portrait for Windows supports the following Operating Systems:

• Windows 98 / 98SE / Millennium
• Windows 2000 / XP / 2003

You must also install Windows Installer 2.0 and DirectX 8.0a or higher to make use of Portrait for Windows.
