Moving the AvantGo for Handheld PC data store to a storage card

Overview

By default the Handheld PC AvantGo off-line file content viewer data store is installed into the main RAM of your H/PC device.
Depending on the number of channels you synchronise, and the depth of those channels, this information can take up a large proportion of your devices internal storage memory. This article outlines how to change the data store location from main RAM to a Storage Card device such as a CF or ATA Flash disk.

How-to Guide

WARNING: If you move the data store on your Handheld PC to a backup store location, and subsequently the mount point name (e.g. Storage Card, Storage Card2) of the storage device changes, synchronisation will fail, and could potentially lead to device instability or data corruption. It is recommended that Windows CE 2.11 and above uses follow the steps outlined in CESDH0010 prior to making modifications to your Handheld PC.

To change the location of the AvantGo data file store follow the steps outlined below.

WARNING: If you use a Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to hard reset your Handheld PC back to its factory installed configuration. Edit your Windows CE registry at your own risk.
  1. Synchronise your device with the AvantGo server system
  2. Disconnect from ActiveSync and soft reset your Handheld PC
  3. Open your registry editor and navigate to the following Key:
    HKEY_Current_User\Software\Avantgo
    NB: If you require a Windows CE registry editor see CESDS0082
  4. Locate the string value named:
    DataBaseLocation
  5. Change the data value from the default \windows\avantgo to a new location on your storage card e.g.
    \Storage Card\Program Files\AvantGo\Cache
  6. Save the changes and exit your registry editor
  7. Using Windows CE Explorer, locate the data cache folder in main RAM and move it (renaming if necessary) to the location you specified in step 5
  8. Soft reset your device and synchronise with your host PC
  9. AvantGo will now use the new data store location to cache off-line page information
