Only Coxion download servers are displayed when running HPC:Factor's Internet Explorer 5.0 for Windows 3.11 Setup

CESD|200207

Applies To

  • Windows 3.10, 3.11
  • Windows NT 3.51

Overview

When running Internet Explorer 5.0 setup under Windows 3.1x or NT 3.51 from HPC:Factor's download site, you are only presented with the single download source provided by Coxion, instead of the hpcfactor.com international distribution share.

Once you have encountered the Coxion instance, you will be unable to continue with the setup process.

This condition can occur under non-English versions of the Internet Explorer setup.

More Info

The error occurs because Coxion, the original download provider used under the Internet Explorer 5.0 release no longer provide hosting access for the binary file content required to complete the setup.

HPC:Factor has created a work-around for this problem which will enable you to continue with the setup process.

How-to Guide

You will require Internet access on your Windows 3.1x / NT 3.51 installation in order to complete the installation process from HPC:Factor's download servers.

To complete the installation process from HPC:Factor

  1. Run setup.exe so that you are on the first screen of the installation wizard.
    Do not advance through the installation wizard after this point. Do not exit the installation wizard after this point.
  2. Head to the Windows Temp folder and you should find in there a folder named similarly to ~ASE3146.TMP (where the last numeric digits are random).
    Note: This folder may be hidden on your system. You will need to enable the View Hidden file option in File Manager.
  3. In the temp folder, locate the read-only file named iesetup.inf
  4. Change the file attributes so that the file is no longer read only (File > Attributes)
  5. Open iesetup.inf in Windows Notepad
  6. In the lower 1/8 of the document you will find a line that reads:
    URL = “http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie5/download/rtw/w31”
  7. Replace it with:
    URL = “http://www.hpcfactor.com/downloads/msie/ie50/DOWNLOAD/win16”
  8. Save the file
  9. Return to the Wizard and run the installation as normal
