How to create a Dial-up Internet Connection using Remote Networking

CESD|200015

Applies To

  • Windows CE 2.0, 2.0 SP1
  • H/PC Professional
  • HPC2000

Overview

Remote Networking provides the ability to create and manage both Direct Cable (Null Modem, IrDA etc.) as well as Dial-up connections to corporate servers and Internet Service Providers. This article outlines how to create a Dial-up connection to connect to your Internet Service Provider (ISP).

Software Guide

In order to set-up a dial up connection you will require a Internet Dialup account from an Internet Service Provider (ISP). You will also require a modem. On Windows CE this can be a built-in modem (if your device is equipped with one), a PCMCIA (PC Card) modem or a external modem attached to the COM port or an Infrared modem - either a compatible, data enabled cellular phone or a stand-alone IR modem.

If you currently do not have a modem for your Handheld PC, visit the HPC:Factor Hardware Compatibility List (HCL) for information on hardware accessories for your version of Windows CE.

Modem drivers

Most PC Card modems will not require a driver to function. Windows CE makes use of international standard modem commands or AT commands to initiate dialling. So long as your modem is Hayes AT compatible your will be able to use it with the Handheld PC.

In the case of Cellular phone and Infrared modem connections a driver will be required on most devices (the Jornada 700 series is a notable exception). HPC:Factor's HCL contains driver downloads for phones which have been confirmed as compatible with Handheld PC devices. In the event that your Phone/Modem is not listed in the HPC:Factor has also written and released a Generic Infrared (GenIrDA) Modem Driver for use with all Windows CE device running Windows CE 2.0 and above.

For more details on the GenIrDA Modem driver visit the download site here.

  1.

To set-up a Dial Up connection:

  • Tap on 'Start'

  • 'Programs'

  • 'Communications'

  • Open 'Remote Networking'

This will display the "Remote Networking" connections screen

2.

Connect or insert you modem into you device now. In most cases this is a question of inserting the PC Card into the PCMCIA slot and tapping Yes when prompted whether to use the device on battery.
For infrared users you will need to activate the IR device from the menu system on the phone or by following the manufacturers instructions.

3.

Double tap on 'make new connection' icon. The Connection Wizard will now start.

Type a name for your connection. This can be anything that you want. It is suggested that you use the name of you ISP e.g. BT Internet, CompuServe, Microsoft Network, Wanado etc.

Select 'Dial Up Connection' from the list on the right and tap next

4.

Choose Your Modem:

In the drop box select your modem. If you are using an external device or it is not listed select 'Hayes Compatible On Com 1'.
PC Card modems will be displayed using a friendly name familiar to the specific modem in question. Infrared users should select the Generic Infrared Modem option applicable to their device.

Tap on the configure button

  1. Set the baud rate to the maximum available. This will allow you modem to access the Internet at an optimum speed.

  2. Data bits = 8

  3. Parity = None

  4. Stop Bits = 1

  5. Flow Control = Hardware

 Tap OK to this screen

5.

Back at the Wizard screen. If you know your servers IP address information, tap on TCP / IP and fill in the relevant information. Entering this information will give your device a head start when accessing web sites. It is available from your ISP or network administrator.

6.

TCP / IP settings

If your Internet Service Provider (ISP) allows for fixed IP addressing, and you wish to use a fix IP address type it in:

  1. Deselect 'Server-assigned IP Address'

  2. Tap in the dialogue box and enter your 4 section IP address. You do not need to enter the decimal points.

Otherwise make sure that 'Server-assigned IP address' is selected

Check 'Use Software Compression' and 'Use IP header compression'

If you wish to specify the addresses for your ISP's servers you can do so by entering the 'Name Servers' tab. You do not have to enter this information in order to dial into a ISP, however it may prove useful when trying to optimise the Internet connection. The server address data is available from your ISP

When finished tap 'OK'

Tap 'Next'.

7.

Fill in your ISP's telephone access number as directed.

Choose whether it is a long distance rate or a local rate call. This process makes use of Dial settings (Telephony), which will need to be modified from "communications" in the Windows CE Control Panel.

Tap 'Finish'.

8.

Once complete, double tap the new connection entry on the main Remote Networking screen.

You can now enter the username and password for your ISP's connection. If you wish to save the password so that you are not required to type it in for subsequent connections, place a tick in the 'Save Password' box.

When dialling an ISP, you do not need to enter a Domain. This feature is designed to allow mobile workers to connect to office network resources from remote locations and will be provided to you by your corporate administrator. For ISP dial-up connections you can leave this blank.

9.

Now that you have filled in all the details necessary to connect to your ISP, tap on the 'Connect' button to begin dialing-up to the Internet
