Uninstalling the Nokia Infrared (IrDA) driver update from a Handheld PC

CESD|200063

Applies To

  • Windows CE 2.0

Overview

The Nokia driver update is provided by Nokia and via the HPC:Factor Hardware Compatibility List to allow Windows CE 2.0 users to use the Infrared port on their Cellular Phone to access the Internet.
The software driver does not always provide a functional uninstall routine to enable users to completely remove the driver.

The program driver can be installed on the Handheld PC simply by using the Nokia Modem.exe file. This method of installing the driver does not provide any Uninstall method.

You may need to remove the driver if you no longer use a Mobile Phone equipped with an Infrared Port or you have installed another third party IrDA driver which is conflicting with the Nokia driver.

NB: If you wish to use the HPC:Factor Generic Infrared Modem driver for Windows CE 2.0 you must remove the Nokia driver

Solution

If an entry named 'Nokia Nokia IrDA Update' is not listed in Remove Programs in the control panel, or for any reason the uninstall entry fails. Use the following to remove the driver update:

Removing the IR Key if Standard deletion fails

There is a known issue with the Nokia driver. The Installer adds a corrupt set of registry values which some registry editors are unable to delete. If you find that the IR Key has not been removed when you soft reset or refresh your registry editor:

  1. Highlight the Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ExtModems\
  2. From the File Menu Export the Key and all sub keys to a .REG or .TXT file
  3. Open the exported file in a Text Editor or Pocket Word as Plain Text
  4. Delete the following from the file:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ExtModems\IR]
" FriendlyName"="Nokia Phone on Infrared port"
    " Port"="COM3:"
    " DeviceType"=dword:00000001
  5. Save the file ensuring that it remains Plain Text
  6. In the registry editor delete the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ExtModems\ Key and all sub keys
  7. From the File menu choose Import and introduce the edited .REG or .TXT file back into the registry
  8. Close all programs and Soft Reset your Handheld PC
