I have two CE devices with IrDa interfaces. Sadly I don't have any way of directly connecting with my PC to either of them, so I've been wondering:

Would it be possible to pass the IrDa port of one of the devices through to my PC (it has USB), so that I can effectively communicate through that device over IrDa with the other one?

Some early 2000s laptops have IrDa built in, but you can buy adapters. Tekram or IRmate are probably the most consistent from what I've heard.

Not at the hardware level. It's technically possible to do it over IP, but you'd need a router software in the middle and an ethernet/WiFi connection on the middle device to facilitate that.

Your best bet is a for simplicity. You can do ActiveSync over IP as well if you have an Ethernet adapter. Everything is simpler over serial/IR though.
