VCDs are just standard Mpeg1 files ( the *.mpg extension has been renamed *.dat). Any Mpeg1 compatible player can play VCDs, if your CPU is powerful enough: VCDs are encoded with 1150 Kbits/s, which is generally too high for most CE devices. You can try to overclock your CPU if you have got an Xscale device.

I tried to put some VCDs in into my CD/DVD player drive (linked to my HPC) and the Mobilepro didn't even load the disc, while it usually loads fine DVD and CD data discs..VCDs often also have menus, probably that's one of the main reasons why the mobilepro does not load VCD discs

Dan, is the VCD Disk drive mounted (visible) on the 900c file explorer ? If not, it is not a standard ISO Joliet CD-Rom, and TCPMP/ HPC Media Player will not be able to access the *.dat video file. In that case, copy the dat file to your PC hard disk, and burn it to a standard CD-ROM file or to a big compact flash card ( you can rename the dat file to a mpg file if you want).

Edit: some old Philips CDI VideoCDs used a strange file format, and were not usable as standard CD-ROMs.

My previous 1.07 version had a minor language resource bug (GAPI dialog); The corrected package can be downloaded here:
http://rapidshare.com/files/54460479/HPC_MP1.07.zip.html

Sorry for the inconvenience...

Yes that way worked fine, just wondering if there were any chance to get the Hpc Media Player to play directly VCDs disks without the procedure you mentioned. Don't know if these disks are standard ISO, maybe I'll check. By the way the disk drive is not visible, so I assume it's not an Hpc Media player issue.

Thanks Geared

Thanks Geared. I use it to full satisfaction on my PNA.

Is it possible for you to implement bigger screen items like fonts/menus and buttons? A little more finger friendly so to speak? Or are there other ways? Like skinning?

Cheers

Menus and Font size depend from OS settings: you can change them with an utility like Tillanosoft SmallTweak ( search with google).

Thanks for you reply.

And for the buttons / slidebar etc...?

In general: is it possible to make it more finger friendly?

A second question pops up. Is it possible for you to store
the settings to a INI file instead of the registry?

Because my PNA looses power often.

Thanks in advance.

Cheers

ps: I downloaded 1.07 by the about screen still says 1.05 ;O)

-1) HPC Media Player is not a complete rewrite of the original TCPMP: it is just a customized version for HPCs, with many add-ons and plugins. So, don't expect new UI features. If your PNA has hardware buttons, you can map them to any player feature; I would never buy a PNA without hardware buttons (like many new PNAs)...

-2) If your PNA looses power often, use a backup utility like sunnysoft backup manager for example.

-3) 1.07 and 1.05 are nearly identical expect that 1.07 has more plugins.

Hmmm, with regard to the CDI disks, it's not a problem with the files (they should be VCD compliant), but rather the filesystem. Some of those CDI-only disks used the OS-9 filesystem - if you need to read those you can only do so on a Win 9x machine with the filesystem vxd available from icdia.org.

Also, i could be wrong here, but i think only VCD 2.0 supported menus - and whilst i've had a few players that play vcd's in my time, i could still never get the menus for my 3-disc (standard iso, NOT cdi os-9!) chitty chitty bang bang up on anything other than my CDI-210.

Well done tho Geared2003 - am looking to trying this release out, as i've not had much like with video on my 720 so far

Can someone reupload screenshots of the newest version? The screenshots posted initially in this thread are now defunct from the crash earlier this year.

The UI is simple and basic: it hasn't changed much in the latest version. The latest additions are not visible ( new plugins like Flash video and subtitles).

Anyway, this is how it looks like on my 900c:
