| Multitouch on CE?..
Is there any website of this device?
Edit: i remembered this one... The GUI is not windows native - we will not be able to run standart Windows CE apps on it as far as I guess...

| website: http://www.meizu.com/cn/m8.html
A Demo in Flash http://www.meizu.com/cn/Taste.html
apparently no English version yet.
Some interesting points:
1. Meizu is now doing public testing in China @ US$345. Official sales date no fixed yet. No plans to export soon. not sure about the patent issues related to Iphone in US.
2. A limited number of PPC software can run on M8 and there is little CE software optimized for M8. No SDK for M8 yet. In short, M8 users do not have much to play with right now. Meizu claims to have spent thousands of bucks on a customized version of Opera. However, the initial user feedback indicates this Opera experience is not satisfatory. Some users say browsing is not smooth, even with wifi.
Ironically, some PPC sotware does run on M8 (w/ tweaks ), but the buttons or fonts look too small to press with fingers. Coz M8 uses capacitive touchscreen, as Iphone, normal stylus can not be used.
3. The machine has a proximity sensor, 3-axis accelerometer and ambient light sensor. Photo browsing, web browsing, and music playing support different screen orientations. the same as Iphone.
The maker claimed to have prototype designs and annouce the development project before the launch of Iphones. Indeed, the discussion of this phone began around the year-end of 2006 on the company's forum. (or early 2007? very near the announcement of Iphone. Steve Jobs annouced Iphone on January 9, 2007, I know ) So Meizu holds that M8 is not a copy cat or a simple iphone-clone.

no. standard ce app (not PPC version ) is a piece of cake for M8.
TCPMP, Softmaker, Haalireader, Coreplayer, Alreader and much more have been confirmed to be running well on M8. This is also the case for all those appz working on S3 HP 720 NBP, etc.
The real issue is that the menu or fonts of these appz look too small to press with fingers or read, under this 3.4-inch screen @ 720*480. Font size can be increased using the standard ce.net method, but not the actual menu size.
still hard to press. As i mentioned belowed, the standard stylus can not be used.
refer 2 the pic of Resco Photo Viewer for this problem

| Come on admit it, it's an iPhone clone There are clones of everything in China. Still I'm impressed.
Unfortunately, it cannot be used in North America
"GSM (900, 1800 MHz )"
It'd be kinda nice to have an iPhone with CE. Altho I still prefer thumbboard (STILL using a Wizard myself ).
There are aftermarket stylus for iPhone (just a metal stylus or something? ) Or people say you can use a metal pen?
*edit* So what's stopping them from putting WM6 on it?? Edited by takwu 2008-12-20 3:23 PM

for the clone issues, i am just reflecting the opinions of some executives inside Meizu.
Personally, i dont care about the answer which one is the real copycat.
Some ppl have tried iphone stylus on M8. yes it can be used. still, the results are not so positive. Maybe the user have to get used to the stylus and improve positioning effeciency.
for the wm6 issue, possibly the Samsung CPU is too new to be put into a WM6 system. The WM6 possibly has a worse support for multi-touch, accelerometer, etc.
A major Chinese mobile phone design house has released a new WM6 phone with pxa310 624 CPU, bt, wifi, gps, vga screen, 3g+tv out+128m ram+FM. It also have an accelerometer, no multi-touch. But the gravity sensor can only be used on few specified programs. Even IE is not supported.
ce6 is different. it is open to lots of customizations or adaptions.

| for the gsm issue, the machine could possibly support more than GSM (900, 1800 MHz).
the current version of M8 supports wifi and edge, but China bans wifi on any mobile phone, being gsm or cdma. So the maker dare not to list too much gsm features on hw specs and consequently remove wordings like Wifi or Edge.
Consequently, other gsm frequency suppot may have also been deliberately removed. | |
