The WiiN-PAD - there is a PPC afterall!

Handheld PC News

Back in November 2022 @torch made reference to the "negative 1 users of Windows CE for PowerPC", it seemed like a safe bet. A year and a half later, cue Cameron Kaiser, who wrote in over the weekend to let us know of a retro tech discovery that he has made, which likely makes him the first +1 user of a Windows CE PowerPC system in what is likely over 20 years.

Cameron managed to find and breath life into a hitherto unknown to HPC:Factor medical tablet device, known as the Data General WiiN-PAD - a device that happens to run on the rare Windows CE 2.12 – and in turn on the even rarer (in the CE world) Motorola PowerPC 821.

Cameron has written an in-depth exploration of the device, complete with a tear-down and plenty of photographs for those curious as to what a 1999 CE Tablet PC looks like.

If you are interested, head over to the Old Vintage Computing Research blog to read more on the find and to see this bizarre piece of Windows CE memorabilia for yourself.
