So for a while I've been evaluating all my options for a GPS for my boat. I didn't want to spend thousands of dollars for a fancy Lowrance/Garmin/Furuno radar with GPS system. I wanted something inexpensive, but functional.
Right now I'm just using a handheld Magellan Explorist 500, which works fine, but is a little hard to see with the tiny screen at times. So I've tried my CF GPS with my laptop, with pocketpcs, but for a GPS, a tablet is really the way to go...one with a touchscreen.
So my latest decision was to purchase a 7" GPS. So far, it seems to work pretty well. It runs Windows CE 6. It runs most all the CE versions of the various GPS programs without any problem. Guess I need to find out which is the best software with marine maps. It has a 2000mAh battery in it, so it works pretty good when on battery power for an extended period of time. And the shell allows easy access to the root CE OS we are all familiar with.
It isn't perfect however. There is just one folder for non-volitile memory storage, though I can put over 1gb of files there easily and access them. The version of windows is missing the files that are needed for CAB installation, but then they would all be installed to the wrong area anyways...so it is just easier to copy them over manually.
I can Activesync easily enough, use CERegEdit, and do whatever I really need to. Too bad there isn't a micro-SD wifi card available...or too bad there isn't any wifi available, or this would make a fine little tablet for everything. Anyways, just thought I'd show you a couple pictures of it. The device, the CE desktop, and playing KSE Backgammon on it.
