Like the title says I want to know the differences before paying the full version.

I'll buy it aniway (I've got the request for the unlock code already written), but I want to know the limitations of each version, because I plan to use it for games, basically, trying to squeeze as much as possible my HPJ680, seeing that it can move DOOM.

Thanks in anticipation.

I would like to experiment with the evaluation version of pocketdos to see whether the programs I want to use will work with it. What extra features are available with the registered version?

Apart from the delay on startup, there is no difference in functionality between the demo and full versions of our software. Please feel free to experiment with the demo version.

Oh, thanks. What causes the delay? Some programs do that because they try to connect to a server which grants access to the software, and then you can use it with some warning or little popup at startup advertising about registering the program (I think Paintshop Pro do something like that and keep on working for years with a "you are on day 678 of using this trial version" ) Is PD one of those cases?

I would assume it's literally just a preprogrammed delay before starting. I highly doubt it attempts to connect to any server.

Oh. Well, something that will disappear once it's unlocked.

Correct, the FAQ seems pretty specific on the differences.

I've got the demo, and the part of the nag screen (nagware?) appears in the readme.txt inside the PockeDos.exe file, along with all the cab files. I couldn't see it in The official faq

I would highly recommend trying out a few of the games you want in the demo first. The SH3 processor in the 680 can only do so much. I’m not trying to dissuade you from purchasing it. I just want you to just be thorough on what works first.

That's the most sensible advice of all. Probably I'm mistaken (and absurdly optimistic) because I've seen videos of Jornadas running DOOM fairly well. I'll test some 386 games that I know worked under Win 95 on an old PC with 16 MB of RAM and a 150 mhz processor (my first PC of 27 years ago)

Check here
http://www.mediator-software.com/pocketdos/specifications.htm

There is a 386 plugin available for download but I don’t believe the sh3 processor can handle 3D games running in pocket dos.
The videos you see of doom are most likely of people running Doom on the native Windows CE ports of Doom.

If you check out this recent thread it’s discussed there

Oh, for me PocketDOS is just a tool to make the Jornada move games of 1995 and below (Lost Eden, Raptor:call of shadows, MaMe, Terminal Velocity...) . I speak of the J680 moving DOOM just in terms of horsepower. If the SH3 CPU can handle DOOM, why not other games with the same requirements or less? Problem is that all those games run under DOS, so, that's why I asked and try to figure if the Unregistered version limits the SH3 capabilities

Okay, I looked at Lost Eden and the requirements say:
System requirements: DOS 5.0 or higher; Windows 3.1/95; 486 SX/DX2/33Mhz processor; 4 MB RAM.

PocketDOS emulates:

Virtual PC Environment Specifications
CPU emulation:

Intel 8086/80186/80286 (real-mode only)*

The SH3 processor I don't believe is sufficient to run 486
Even the Jornada 720 per this review:
https://www.hpcfactor.com/reviews/editorial/bochs-2-1-1
Quote
Booting onto a Windows 98 SE boot floppy image, running out of main RAM with CD-ROM support takes 10 minutes to deliver you to the prompt. The BIOS POST itself set with 12 MB of ram takes over a minute to configure the boot environment.

You need to look into games that are:
Intel 8086/80186/80286 (real-mode only)*
for best speed

OR

a native Windows CE version like what I just showed in my previous post for Doom, etc

Anytime you emulate something, it creates a speed handicap.

If you're insistent on trying 486, there's a plugin here
By default, the PocketDOS install supports Intel 8086/80186/80286 (real-mode only)*
