HAHA! I was just lucky that the scratching on the 690 screen is not visible with the unit on. I took a gamble on it for sure.

ABBADON - 2024-02-22 9:16 PM

I think I'll go for a pack I've seen for a prize similar to that: 1GB CF and a multicard reader, 25€ total
I am gathering programs, and this weekend I'll start
messing around with the HPJ680. Just to see if I can do the process with the sync cable.

Make sure you have a Windows XP or older computer for using serial cable and Active Sync. It does NOT work with newer operating systems, at least for me it hasnt and ive stayed up over night trying to get it to work on newer computers and found no solution. So dont frustrate yourself like i did. ;-)

I discovered that I'll be forced to buy a RS232 to USB cable, because my Aspire One hasn't any serial port

Yeah i am using a Serial to USB adapter to hook my palmtops up. It starts to add up some of this, but once ya got this stuff, it makes it easier in the future if ya get another unit. But ive found multiple uses for the serial to USB adapter.

This is the adapter i am using. ^^^^^

HAHA! I was just lucky that the scratching on the 690 screen is not visible with the unit on. I took a gamble on it for sure.

I have been in contact with usedhandhelds and they have a screen (so i can replace the scratched screen), a 690 mobo with ram/rom and a bottom like whats on my 680e, i want a bottom like that on my 690 and i already tried it and it fits and will work. So those are the 3 things.

By doing this i will figure out quite a few things, including:

Is the 690 ram/rom module compatible with the 680 or 680e ?
Will a 690 board fit in a 680e enclosure ?

and some other things i want to try etc.

But they have been a real help on finding parts for me, got to give them mad props for digging these parts out for me. :-)

Woot woot ! So my 680e may get 32mb of ram, or it may turn into a 690 in a 680e case haha. Then id have a backup mobo and a just incase all hell breaks loose a digitizer.

As Ozzy says, "Let the madness begin" haha.

Heres a video of my 680e and 690 together. In it you can see the scratched surface on the screen on the 690. But when the unit is on and the brightness is set correctly, you really cant see the scratches. Lucky, but def someone obsessed with Solitare owned this.

I gave a shout out to HPCfactor and Usedhandhelds in the video. Without this site, i dont know what i would do. Having the support for all these machines, its amazing. Were very lucky for this site in particular as the software and these forums are a life saver for everyone who owns one of these machines.

^ Video of 680e and 690.

I cant wait to do the video of the screen change, trying the rom etc. Gonna be fun :-) A deep dive into 680's and 690's. :-)

First crazy thing I'll do is test Tomb Raider Will it work? it does not require Directx, and its a DOS native program that works fine with 16GB RAM and a 90 mhz processor... IDK if the share ware version of pocketdos will let me do it. Wish me luck!!

But it wouldn't hurt to try it out... but I'm guessing point and click games would be better suited. I don't think anything graphics intensive like that would work.. I'm not an expert, just my educated guess

Seems complicated, then. Better I focus on 486 dx100 games.

Yeah I don’t think 486 DX games will work.
I’d try ones for Intel 8086/80186/80286 (real-mode)

Oh yeah i meant to say this last night. I experimented with different memory cards and the unit takes up to a 2gb. It will take a bigger card, but itll only think its 2gb. I even had a 32gb card in it last night and as i said it worked, but showed the size to be only 2gb. But 2gb ! Thats crazy for a device like this haha for sure.
