Are all 10/100 mbps ethernet cards 32 bit? I have a 3com 3C562d that I am looking for a ce driver - doesn't seem to be one - then I noticed that all of the other 10/100 base t cards say that they are 32 bit.

I know Xircom made a 16-bit one and even had CE 2.11 drivers for it. (I actually have one, but have never been able to get it to connect.)

3Com had the 3C574 which is 16-bit, and Netgear had (I think) the MA401. Though I don't know if either had CE drivers.

Is it worth trying to find one for an HPC, though? IIRC, 16-bit 10/100 cards max out about about 21Mbps throughput (based on an old Tom's Hardware review I read). Can an HPC even generate that much throughput?

The MA-401 is a wireless card (and yes, there are CE drivers for it).

i would say dont touch the 3com's..

there are some CF 10/100 lan cards for pocketpcs, should work.

and the older lan cards are all 16 bit and they can be 10/100. true, it is easier to just get a 10mbps ne2000, because that doesnt need drivers (they are in rom on almost all hpcs)...

I would also say its nice to have an older CF lan (wired) card if available because

1. As Cmonex commented most hpc or ppc supports these ne2000 compatible cards
Ive tried it on MP900c, Sig3, J710, NetBook Pro etc and all works just fine for me ( plus Zaurus sl-c1000 linux)

2. With a CF/PC adapter you can hook it up to any PC slot if you want to ..
J710 for example and Windows PC / Linux PC (KNOPPIX) too

3. Further you can easily make it wifi equivalent if you have a gadget like " Pocket Wireless ASUS AP-133g" .
I bought this about two years ago at $65
For more detail on this you can google it or visit at http://www.tbreak.com/reviews/article.php?id=317

Im sure You can enjoy it this way without any driver issues

That would be the Xircom CE3B-100BTX Credit Card Ethernet 10/100.

I know because I have one also. Unlike you I've managed to get mine to connect. It's a bit of a temperamental card though. It oftens takes a second restart for it to connect, but still....it works.

When it's working it's actually not too bad as far as speed goes....well as fast as a 620LX can get I guess.

Thanks! I am not really interested in 10/100. The question came up when I was looking at 2 cards I have that are 10/100 but could not decide if they are 16 or 32 bit. One is generic so I am not sure what kind of driver it will need.

Oops, I meant to say FA-410 (and FA-411).

(I have one, but no dongle.)

32 bit has a golden bar at one edge... if it doesnt, try ne2000 as driver name.

Almost all 32-bit 'Cardbus' cards are required to denote this on the rerar of the card, otherwise, it'll say 'PCCard'
