And IRC client and a new IM client are both in the cards, and I'm going to say here and now that they are going to be completely free and (eventually) open source to the community. I'm a poor student so I know how it is to other poor people.
WOW. i've been planning to write an IRC client after i learnt c++... i'd like to help you but i can't right now.
however i can help with testing!

It's going to be a few weeks before I get up to speed so if you want to start up I can certainly provide assistance as well
Features would be great, I think I'll be making a thread or two when I feel I'm comfortable enough to take requests.
