| Can it works by GPS device which is plugged in USB slot? And do i need to install the driver of GPS device? |
|
|
|
| Don't know...
Would assume it needs some sort of driver or at least GPS support built in to the USB but havn't a clue. Though there are plenty of CF or Bluetooth GPS recivers that work fine and are really quite cheap on ebay.. |

| USB GPS requires a driver to work. I have seen specific USB drivers (Pharos) for PPCs (Toshiba), but no drivers for HPCs. |

| I see.Thanks! |

| ppc and hpc are 99% compatible at the driver level. except maybe user interface, but a usb driver won't need any.
so has anyone tried those toshiba drivers? of course only if they are made for wm2003/2003se. (ppc2000/2002 might have compatibility issues with ce.net) |

| I tried both some time ago but could not make it work. Maybe, with help from cmonex, I can try them again to hopefully make at least one work. That'd give MP900C a new dimension as Pharos GPS receiver becomes really cheap!

| Okay, I tried the WM2003 driver from Pharos, but no success yet.
I used the extracted CAB file to install to the default location on MP900C with Cmonex v2. Although the system warned it's not compatible with the machine, I went ahead to complete the installation. After a soft reset, I connected Pharos iGPS-360 with a USB to serial cable (the GPS receiver has a customized serial interface). At the insertion, MP900C asked for the driver name. I knew the driver name is USBSER.dll, but the system refused to accept. The GPS receiver did light up. I did use Hex editor to check the CAB file, but found no clue.
Here is the info from the registry:
..\USB\ClientDrivers\CEUSB_driver
..\USB\LoadClients\1659_8963\0_0_0\255_0_0\CEUSB_driver\USBSER.dll
ExecutabilityCheck reported: \Windows\USBSER.dll is Invalid File.
BTW, the chip inside is Prolific PL-2303. The driver seems to be a custom build (found thru a Hex editor).
I guess, some hacking is required. How?

| According to Pharos, the driver is for Toshiba PPCs with USB host port. Unfortunately, I don't have PPC with USB host. I opened the CAB file and the DLL one using a Hex editor, but don't know what to look for.

| It turned out that the USB to serial cable branded 'Microsoft' has a product ID different from Pharos' for Toshiba PPCs though the vendor ID remains the same. I changed the PID to the right one and now MP900C won't ask for the driver name. I assume the device is recognized by the system. I'm in the process of copying Pharos maps and testing it on MP900C. Stay tuned! |

| Unfortunately, I have not been able to make it work though the driver seems to work (after editing the registry entry ) and the GPS receiver does light up. I tried all the COM ports from 0 to 14 but none picked up GPS signal. The likely port is 1 to 4. Toshiba e400/350/750 use COM2 while e800 uses COM4. If I let Ostia 7 set up the port automatically, then it fails with the GPS receiver off ( I had to do a hard reset to install the driver and change the registry entry again to make MP900C recognize the receiver ). I guess the problem is with the communication between the software and the receiver. Other software might be able to do a better job.
For future reference, I list the VID and PID for the USB to serial cable for Pharos/Microsoft iGPS-360/500:
Vendor ID: 067B (Hex ) or 1659 (Decimal )
Product ID: aaa0 (Hex ) or 43680 (Decimal )
Maybe, some people can make it finally work.
BTW, installing Pharos' Ostia 7.0 on MP900C with Cmonex v2 is simply a breeze. Edited by CAuser 2008-08-03 4:19 PM
