Hi just a quick question,
I managed to aquire a J728 rom/memory unit
from a broken J728. Can I install it in my J710 making it in essence a
728?

Regards

I may be wrong, but as far as I know the only difference between the 710 to the 720 is the modem. So I don’t see why the RAM upgrade won’t work to make it a 728. http://www.pocketpctechs.com/detail.asp?Product_ID=J72-032-064RAM
But you said ROM? I am not sure……

OK, I have worked out the rom swap will work,
but how do I go about physically opening up the jornada
and installing the rom / memory board?

  1. Full power down ,including coin cell

  2. remove addon devices

  3. 180 degree flip onto the lid

  4. T6 screwdriver the three screws on the front edge (the ones with the arrows)

  5. 180 degree flip

  6. open the screen up

  7. remove keyboard completly - dont take chances with the bus lead, just disconnect it completly

  8. use the stylus and a finger nail to evenly pry out the ROM chip (white near square block off-centre to the left.

Repeat and install as necessary

Easy as Pi (3.14159265)

Thanks C:amie -but the rom swap did not quite work as expected.
It works but GAPI onlyl seems to work on 710settings so I'm left
with a kind of hybrid machine - a 710 with 64mb ram.

This is what i bought

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5775848744&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

1 of the 728's only needed a real hp charger to charge the battery and I'm using it
to type this now.

The other is the one I did the rom swap with my 710.

So I now need to bite the bullet and swap screens from my 710
to my 728 (will swap the rom back during the process)

And then I will need to sacrifice my 680 to use it's screen and keyboard
to make up missing parts.

So Inevetably I'm asking for more help ......

Especially with the 710 to728 screen swap as I want to keep the funky silver surround.

Regards

Sorry for the long absence from the forums. Studying two majors (medicine, and computer science) at the same time is REALLY not easy

Here are some answers to the questions you have

1.- GAPI will only work with 710 settings because video memory address changes in the 710 with every reboot, while 72x have the same permanent address, to get it working in j72x mode, you'll need a j72x mobo. (video memory layout in 71x is a bitch)

2.- the screen enclosure (silver part in 728's) is just two pieces of plastic, to detach them:
a) open the lower case (the one having mobo and rom), disconnect the screen bus from the mobo. it can be done without this step but voltage is very high, believe me, i've personally had a close encounter with screen innards
b) detach the quasi-cilindrical part covering the hinges (the one that has notification led)
c) remove screen from the rest of the artifact (carefull about video cable, if won't fit straight through the space it passes)
d) peel off the screen stickers. one has the HP logo and say "Hewlett packard" and the other says "728", those are located near the hinges.
e) you'll find 2 screws, one underneath each sticker, remove them
f) CAREFULLY open the screen enclosure by the side, completely, so you'll have the front part with the screen and the back part alone.
g) detach video bus (big) and digitalizer (small) connectors, located on the opposite sides of the screen
h) wash, rinse and repeat in reverse order to assemble with the working screen

any questions, pm me, i've finally got a digicam (in the form of a cameraphone) and may be able to explain the procedure more "graphically"

u need to dissect the screen like that because screen cable wont pass around the hinges easily, so it's easier to keep the current cable and only change the screen

[EDIT] if you want a J Keybd i've got a non working one to sell (Us english version, ABA), if your current keybd works you can swap the keys from one to another [/EDIT]

Hope this helps

I would like to know if you used the 728 memory or is it available for sale? I need the memory for my Jornada 720.
Please e-mail me at mannybj@optonline.net.
Thanks.

There is no official HP update other than buying a 728 RAM/ROM Module. or you can visit this link where you might be able to get an update. but please be aware that it involves sending your unit to the ppctechs facility, located in the US.

Hope this helps
