I was just wondering, if there is a way to change the resolution? I came across an app but it was not Freeware. Any suggestions?

for the most part because the start bar gets in the way of a lot of windows and I dont exactly like using the auto hide.

The only program that will do this is Nyditot Virtual Display, but it's definitely not freeware.
(I'm guessing that's what you found already.

is the link. It is generally used for Pocket PC/Windows Mobile applications which have windows that are taller than most HPC screen heights, but IIRC it should work with any program really.
