Thanks - so if i swap my working 690 battery into a "spares or repair" 720 and it does not work .... what else could be wrong? Any ideas where I start to get it working?

Could be a lot of things, so it's hard to say where to start. But if you put in a fully charged battery pack, and you get no sound or picture when you turn it on, you'll probably have to replace the motherboard. Your best bet is probably to find another parts 720 that powers on but has a broken screen, and swap out screens with the one you have. (I did the same thing myself last year with two parts 720s, building a fully working 720 for a friend.)

Of course. The shell of the 680, 690, 710, 720 and 728 is all exactly the same (ignoring colours), so is the battery!

Not last time I checked. The outside size and contour is the same, but the CF slot is different, Mainboard and memory card are different, screens don't interchange, etc. But, yes, the bat and stylus from the 680/690 vs the 710/720/728 are interchangable.
