When I reset my HP Jornada 720, and it enters the desktop, I cannot tap the screen. The touch screen doesn't seem to recognise or respond to my stylus. I tried double-taping one of the applications, and not a sound or response came from the device. Next I tried using the keyboard as an interface. A good place to start was the start button on the keyboard. The start button wouldn't show up and the OS stayed static. The OS still doesn't respond to the keyboard.

I reset it again, hoping that it's only a temperamental screen/OS. It happens again. OS doesn't respond to the stylus or keyboard ... strange when HP has a good reputation for quality and reliability.

Any help will be appreciated.

Do a hard reset. Remove all cards and both batteries. Wait a moment, then replace them. Restore your settings from a backup.

Your joking!

I don't want to hard reset it now! I've got too many programs on it, and some important documents to keep.

You may have no choice....can you connect to a desktop via activesync and transfer the files, or is that connection locked up as well?

- even though the 720 has a very good backup utility in ROM.

Of course. Everything is hung, except the reset button. The computer and the Jornada will not syncronise with each other, and I haven't saved anything on my CF card.

I have, however collected all application setup files hidden in a folder somewhere on my desktop, so not everything is gone.

You might also want to meditate on what caused this issue. While it could have been a random hardware malfunction, but I'd guess it was software....

If you use the CF card, hard resets won't take out your documents...

Sorry to hear about your problems.

Just because it's there doesn't mean it will be used.

Well, what's cool is that you can still download the version 2 update online. (I even cheated a little and put it on my Jornada 430SE Palm-size PC, and it works fine there even though you have to use the stylus to move the window around since it's supposed to be for H/PCs. )

CE Geek,

What do you mean by 'version 2 update online'? I haven't seen this before...

Thanks and regards!

I'm talking about version 2 of HP backup, an updated version of the backup utility preinstalled on Jornada H/PCs. See this page:

The only function I can use is the reset hole. The On/Off button won't work ... nothing except that reset button. It loads the desktop and I can't do anything.
