Compaq Aero 8000 RAM upgrade

I picked up a 64 MB RAM module (OEM part number 101858-B21) from Edge Technologies, which I've installed in my Aero 8000. (Easy to do: remove batteries, lift keyboard after releasing three small latches, and swap out the modules.) However, under Control Panel -> System, it only shows 32 MB of RAM. (The stock RAM module had 16 MB.) Unless I'm mistaken, the Aero 8000 supports up to 64 MB of RAM. Anyone else had this experience when upgrading RAM?

I purchased the 32mb upgrade from EdgeTech a while back, and it's worked fine. I did try a 64mb ram chip from another Aero once, but my Aero wouldn't read it.

But you're right, it's supposed to support up to 64mb.

Just in case you're wondering, I have e-mailed Edge to report the problem and am awaiting a response. The module does have a sticker on it that says it's 64 MB.

it only recognized 64MB but works well it seems to be a standard PC66 SODIMM slot

It is - that's one nice feature about the Aero 8000. You don't need a proprietary RAM module.

Weird that it recognized half the memory in both our cases, though I'd've expected it in your case in any event since the Aero doesn't support more than 64 MB RAM, according to the info I've been able to track down online.

I had this same problem a few months ago with Edge as well. It turned out that they gave me the wrong density chips, which only showed up as 32 MB. The technician working with me only figured it out when he got the numbers off the chips themselves. It took them a few days to get replacements, but they made it right.

Also, don't be surprised when the memory shows up as 16mb program memory / 48 mb storage memory.

I know about the memory issue - Windows CE 2.11 doesn't support more than 16 MB of program RAM. But the extra storage memory will be useful for drivers (like the Socket Bluetooth driver, which includes a CE 2.11 SH4 version), as well as runtime libraries like eVB and PocketC. I could do fine with a 32 MB chip, but since it supports up to 64 MB, and the 64 MB chip is only a couple of dollars more, I figured why not get the larger one.

That's what I figured too. And it does seem to perform better.

Well, Edge sent me a replacement, but it also shows up as only 32 MB.

DarkKnight, what's the item number on the Edge stick-on label on your 64 MB module? I want to see if it's the same as mine. (I've e-mailed Edge tech support again in the meantime.)

The numbers are:

The big number across the top: 03144SU064MN110808.
The barcode number: 52977 13761
On the chip itself: 5250207-11

Big help - thanx. The number on my chip is 5395901-11, clearly not the same. I've so advised Edge tech support - we'll see.

for me 64 out of 64 worked fine back then, i guess it was the right density.

The Edge tech support guy says he sent me the same chip he sent you. (The seven-digit numbers followed by "-11" are not part numbers and are not relevant, according to him.) Where are the "numbers off the chips themselves," DarkKnight?

I don't see those anywhere on the chip. Nor do I see "the big number across the top" (03144SU064MN110808).
