| Isn't for you too, Softmaker Textmaker quite slow with jornada 720? I use the version 2008

Correct me if I am wrong but 2008 version doesn't support HPC2000

| I thought so too. I thought 2006 is the one for the Jornada...

So you're saying it opens on the 720, Patrick?

| I've tried Softmaker(s) recently.
The 720 does open the programs on the 2006 version, BUT the menus are single column using a scroll bar and setting options is near impossible.
Precisely the same install runs with wide menus on a 728, whch makes it easy to set options etc.
Might be something to do with the extra memory being sensed?
Version 2008 would not run for me on either a 720 or a 728, but version 2010 runs pretty well on an MobilePro 900.

I think you are seeing the disadvantages of having newer and better. I'll stick with the old 2003 version which was the last version specifically written and designed for the HVGA screens on our 720/728 and 900/900c machines.

But which version performs best on J720?

Now, I have tried TextMaker 2010 for WinCE (version for smaller screen) on my Jornada 720 (64 MB RAM, RedGear) and program seems to work O.K., but it is certainly slow.

Curious, how is it slow? Slow to respond to menus, or slow to allow key input? Slow to save files? Compare it to the built in Pocket Word and give us an example. Do you have only text in your document or does it include fancy smancy tables, graphs, and images?

I have worked only with simple text documents yet. Start of program, opening of files and screen redrawing are slow. Keyboard response is O.K.

Ahhh...there you go. Start of program is slow because it is so large. Loads a lot into memory. You should probably save a large file as a text only file and try opening it with the Pocket Word and see if you see a difference. You might also try adjusting your memory bar to allow the maximum program memory versus storage memory and see if that helps. Let's face it...the J720 never was a speed demon, but still a heck of a lot better than some of the older machines.

Slow TextMaker 2010 is not problem for me, I don't plan to use it. I have only annonced, that TextMaker 2010 is able to run on good old Jornada 720 with RedGear.

Nice to know, though. Maybe I'll try it on the ol' 728. Been looking for something to read DOCX and XLSX files - looks like my CE devices are getting first dibs.

Out of curiosity, where might one go about acquiring a copy of the 2003-ish version of TextMaker for the J720? Does anyone know if SoftMaker will still sell a copy of an old version? Their website is very...spartan.

If you contact them directly, they may work something out with you. They offered the Pocket PC version of Textmaker 2002 on eBay for $15 a couple of years ago. (I picked it up myself back then - while not as nice as the H/PC version, it does work fine. )
