Hello, i'm a new user; not willing to cause any mischief.

I'm eager to buy a Nec 780 (for a fair price),
It is stated (in the auction) that it has

Microsoft Windows CE 3.01 Handheld PC Professional Edition

^ what exactly is it ? is it Windows Pocket 2000 ? I have honestly no idea.. It's confusing, and the HPC_factor 'about windows' article doesn't clear it up for me..

^ Is this windows compatible with software for CE 2.X ?

Will I have problems with acquiring (eg. games) for this unit /windows version/ ?

*sigh* I wish people would stop selling these things as CE3.. even TigerDirect are.

If you look in the system applet it'll state
Windows CE; Handheld PC Edition Version 3.01

It's Handheld PC Professional - as covered in the Histroy of CE article. It's based on CE 2.11, NOT CE 3.

The Mobilepro 780 uses the Windows CE 2.11 operating system. The application software (HPC PocketWord, Excell, etc) is version 3.0, not to be confused, though it appears to be intentional many times on eBay, making one think they are getting more than they are.

With a 780 you can run software written for the MIPS processor and HPC Pro (which is essentially CE 2.11 in the wide screen format). You cannot run software generally written for a pocketpc with any HPC device. (Don't everyone blast me now about Nyditot...I said generally) There are always a few exceptions.

The newer version of the operating system for HPC units (the wide screen devices) after HPC Pro was HPC 2000. HPC 2000 functions under Windows CE 3.0. This includes the popular Jornada 720/728 and the Mobilepro 790/900. HPC 2000 is not the same as Pocketpc 2000, or 2002, or 2003, etc. So don't expect any compatibility there either.

These devices have some nice games, but they were not designed with that in mind. My suggestion is that you go to Henri's site at http://www.yetanotherhomepage.com/j7xx/j7xx.html and click on the software link and look at the games. Follow the links to the authors site and see if he has a version for MIPS HPC Pro. Those games normally work fine.

My sentiments too Chris...it's got to be intentional! I figure someone who would mislead someone probably is not someone I would buy from.

I had an experiment last year, I went through all the incorrectly listed H/PC Pro listings on eBay UK and messaged the listers about their mistake.

Not one replied, not one issued an amendment.

Many thanks for the quick replies.

Considering this, is it a fair unit for the use of internet and games?
So it will run software for win CE 2.0, 2.1 ?

yes, it'll run 2.0 and 2.1 apps, provided that they're compiled for MIPS processor.

Hope this helps

I know CE2.11 doesn't support secure websites like banking, but for general surfing & forums, isn't it good enough for that?
I guess I also wouldn't be able to buy stuff from secure websites, correct?

It is much safer not to buy things... another words don’t. As for surfing sites that are not all that complex. I like the Mobile Favorites sites you can find on this site. You can also do a google search and find sites designed for HPC users.

H/PC Pro supports 128-bit SSL, same as your Windows, *nix or Mac system.

If it has an expired key, it wont let you connect the socket.
