Ok, the MP900 I got earlier this year has a touchscreen I don't like, not very responsive.

I have a spare 780 chassis with a good screen. Can I? Put the 780 screen in the 900?

Thanks

Yes you can, however, you have to change out the ribbon connector which take a few minutes, as the units are constructed differently. Also the touchscreen ribbon on the older digitzer has to be folded in reverse when fitted into the connector since the 900's is reversed from the 780. There is very little room to work with, so you have to be very careful.

One mistake and you have torn it and it is ruined forever. Luckily it is long enough to reach the 900 connector, even though it is offset from the center position of the 780...but it is tight.

You cannot however use the digitizer from a 900 on the 780 since it just won't reach the invertor...it is too short. So if you decide to change them out, you are going to make the 780 useless for touchscreen purposes.

The 780 is more responsive because the acrylic cover is actually thinner than that of the 900 series...NEC decided to toughen it up at the expense of sensitivity when they manufactured it for the newer machine.

Rich,

many thanks. the 780 is kaput anyway and it's spare parts for my 790 but since I'd rather have a comfortable 900 it's a no brainer.

guess I'll try this one day after a good sleep and no drinking...

If the problem is that the touchscreen doesn't respond well (which frankly seems to be a common issue with the 900C - including mine), then wouldn't it be the digitizer you'd want to replace? If so, based on Rich's input, swapping out with the 780 may not be a viable option.

not too sure which part is wonky. there's a couple spots on the screen I have to hit hard to get a response. Also a few scratches that annoy me. So, I'm OOL just changing the screen? Confused here but that's SOP...

Duh, CE Geek - you're reading backwards again.

So it looks like you're okay, wally - unless you decide at the last minute to rescue the 780 instead of the 900.

Hey Rich, odd question for you... Will the MP 700 screen work with a 780/790?

Hmmmm....never tried it before, don't really know. Don't even know the ribbon cable signals out to the LCDs...logically you would think it wouldn't be too difficult to make something work....maybe get varying degrees of grey scale?

Awwww, c'mon cmonex!
I was sorely tempted back when I had a 780, I'll tell you (there's an ebay guy that constantly sells the lcd screen for the 700). I've since traded it (and some other stuff) for a NBP, so I can no longer try...
