I was recently given a HP Jornada 720 (I have never had/used a handheld computer before)
which opens up with a screen that says Windows Powerd Handheld PC 2000. I was told it runs on
Windows CE.
I have tried to find a freeware game of chess on the internet, that would work on it but found the
terminology used and descriptions of the many handheld/portable computers which exist to be
bewildering, but managed to find a few programs that looked as if they were OK for the Jornada
and the description given on the website seemed appropriate, but none worked (one was littlechess
and another was CEBoard 2.0).
I only received various error messages, i.e,. files needed were missing or the program was not suitable
for Windows CE (Programs tried were both .exe and .cab).
In short, can anyone please direct me to a site that has freeware software for the Jordana,
which is clearly labelled for the Jornada.
Sorry to sound so dim!

Many thanks

David

You want software that was compiled for the StrongArm SA1110 processor (rather than MIPS) aka ARM. Did you try Pocket Chess at http://mscdex.game-host.org/hsr/ ?

Thanks.
Now this is a prime example of the problems I have had.
I went to this site, found

Pocket Chess for Windows CE. Games - Board Games
Software Version: 1.0. Software License: Freeware.
Software Author: Scott Ludwig. Compatible OSes: Windows CE 1.0
Compatible Processors: ARM .
Software Description: Great Freeware Chess Software for the
Handheld PC runs on all Processor types

I downloaded PocketchessForCE10.zip and cpied this over to the Jornada from my
PC by Activesync and on clicking it, I was given an error message
(I assumed it would be able to unzip the program). So I therefore unzipped it
all into a subdirectory pocketchessforce10 on my PC and copied this
all over to the Jornada games directory (there is only one other
program there - solitaire).
On clicking the folder (no icon appears on the desktop), I get an error
message saying
There is no application associated with pocketchessforce10

I try again and this time am told
'Cannot convert the file 'Pocketchess''

On looking through the files that have beene copied over to the Jordana,
in the subdirectory (there is no .exe file), I find one called pocketchess in
the mips subdirectory, I click this, but, yet again, receive another message
- this time its,
'pocketchess in not a valid Wimdows CE application'

Phew! Any ideas?

Thanks

David

Is there not an ARM folder with pocketchess.exe inside?

No, as I say, it is the mips subdirectory.

I have now managed to connet the jornada to the internet - now I am looking for a pkunzip
for the jornada 720 so I can try finding & downloading a chess program and
unzipping on the jornada.

Total Commander will do the job:

http://www.ghisler.com/wince2x.htm

However, it doesn't look like Scott Ludwig ever wrote an ARM version of PocketChess (mscdex' listing notwithstanding). The only chess programs written for the ARM processor that I can think of are written for Pocket PCs (meaning that they need some Pocket PC DLL files like aygshell.dll, etc) - and none of them are freeware (though Richard Lang's Chess Genius is not time limited in demo mode).

From my experience, zip downloads from the internet need to be unzipped on the PC, and then either a resulting setup run, or an appropriate ARM cab file copied to the Jornada and run from there (and the cab file then disappears from the Jornada upon installation). Consider using a CF storage card to install most programs to, if you plan to do much with the J, rather than the "Default" location, since it is a fixed quantity within the Jornada and needs to be maximized, since it is split between "Programs" (running) and Storage.

Hmmmm? There are two great HPC chess programs that run on ARM processors. PocketChess which can be found here: http://www.scottlu.com/Content/PocketChessPocketPC.html

Scroll down and see the screenshots. Just run the installer and it will create the cab files you need in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\PocketChess folder. Just copy the Pocketchess.arm.cab file over to your hpc and install it.

The other great program is PalmChess found here: http://www.synctel.com/Products/HPC/PalmChess/content.htm

Same procedure, download and run the executable, then go to the C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\PalmChess folder and copy the palmchess.arm.cab file over and install it.

DavidJordan, your problem is that version 1.0 of PocketChess was an old one, and only had builds for MIPS and SH3...version 2.0 included updates and ARM builds.

There are 3 guides in the support section "Installing Programs from the Host" , "Installing Programs using .cab files" and , "Installing Programs manually". Are you understanding the difference?

Moved to Handheld PC 2000

My mistake (again) on Pocket Chess not having an ARM version. (Open mouth, insert foot. )
