So is that 3Com modem above a "Hayes" compatible modem and is it low-power?

The 3cxm556 is fully hayes compatible, it works practically in any OS, but about the low power issue i think definitively it's not. it works @ 5v

Hope this helps

So how bad IS 5v?

Will it drain my batteries quicker-than-normal, or drain them within seconds (as my Toshiba 2GB PC Card HDD does!)?

I'm starting to think I may never find a Windows CE 1.0-compatible modem worth buying...

If I had a CF modem, I'd test it. Alas I only have 5v PC Card ones, so I do not know to what extent most CF modems will operate under CE1.

I imagine that if it was designed for WinCE 2.x, it would work.

Ok, i've got a compaq 56k compactflash modem. and i think it works with all CE versions, i put it in my J720, J728 and J680 and it automatically detects it as a "CompactModem_56k". they can dial flawlessly. and the best of all is that it works @ 3.3v. It works either directly on the CF slot, or on the PCMCIA slot via an adapter

The part number is 148909-011
The model is: FB CFVFM-5614RD

The card is black except in the part that gets inserted into the CF slot, which has a yellow sticker with the following text: "COMPAQ 56K CompactFlash Modem"

I think it uses a pretec chipset, because it's got a pretec logo on the back.

And if C:Amie is right, it should be compatible, as it was designed for the Aero 8000, which is and H/PC Professional unit (CE 2.11), but in the instruction booklet, the only requirements it asks for are:
-Handheld PC
-Windows CE
it doesn't mention any specific version of CE, so i suppose it *should* be compatible with your H/PC

matrixcore, I've added your modem to the HCL, got anything else you'd care to share?

I'd be willing to bet a shiney penny that it would work under CE1 (Yes a whole penny!)

Mmm matrixcore do you understand bets? If you take it, that means you can keep it if he's wrong, otherwise you have to give it back and pay him another on top of it. Keep betting against C:Amie and I think you'll become poorer instead of richer...

I understand bets. i was talking about winning C:Amie a penny and maybe investing it for... let say 1,000 years. then it'll be a fortune

Matrix,

I may ask to buy that modem off you in the near future...

Would you ever consider selling it?

Sorry, already sold it, i had it for only 3 days. anyways, it was quite expensive (~$50USD) considering you can get them from a 1st world country for a much lesser price. if you don't mind paying that price, i may be able to get one to you, provided that the guy that sold it to me has more. It was in perfect state, sealed in it's original packaging with all the manuals and stuff.

There's no 1 mexican cent coin. lowest denomination is 5cent, but only children carry them, because they're almost worthless. People often have only 50cent and higher (there's 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 and special conmemorative 100 pesos coins) in tender notes, we have 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 and the new (about half year old) 1000 pesos notes. Anytime you like i can send you some coins so you can get to know them.
